Differences between CL and Slackware?
So I am sure that I could troll around the net and find this, but I bet that there are people here who will find this useful...
What is the difference between Slackware and College Linux--I gather that CL is easier to install. Are there many other important (or unimportant) differences?
Thanks

Theres not much difference from what I've seen besides the installer and what's installed.
In CL it seems you don't have much control over your partitions, what's installed, etc which kind of frustrated me as I'm use to Slackware's installer where you can select more than just a swap and / partition to install to and what packages to install.
Also during the install I was kind of suprised that CL uses some old Redhat scripts to detect your mouse and video configuration..
But other than that, I do like CL so far.

Remeber you were (most likely?) looking at the version that is some 6 months old and is about to be replaced by CL 2.5.... But yes, basically CL is meant to be "Slackware made simple" - intended for desktop, more automated installation, more hardware detection, and more assistance with setting up and then managing the system. All the while remaining completely Slackware-compatible.

well the biggest diff between slack and college linux is that, just as the name says, you have to be in college in order to use it. otherwise your simply going to have problems....

cl is a looot smaller. Its iso is like 300 MB, not sure what it is when it's uncompressed, but slack's iso is now like a gig. imho, it's easier for a n00b to use, and a lot of its stuff is really nice. Like the installer. and it comes w/ wine. and it comes w/ that cool background.

Hey guys I am downloading College Linux. This will be my 3rd linux distro that I am trying, I was happy with Rd8 although its pretty barebones. Also Mandrake 9.2 was pretty nice. Now i am on my way to play with college linux. But can anyone tell my what kind off software is included,
ie. multimedia, gimp...blah blah blah I have looked around to see what kinda software is included but i could not find anything. OR maybe i just didnt look hard enough.
Thanks
Tyler

From my install, it seemed mainly desktop type applications, apache, and installs KDE for your default Desktop. You really don't have much control over what is being installed or your partitions which was a turnoff for me, coming from Slackware and having full control as CL is based off Slackware.
But other than that, its a solid distribution and you can always install what you want if it wasn't included.
Cheers.

I can't imagine trying to install Gnome on there... Yeesch... The only way I can think of CL being better than Slack would be for new Linux users to install for the first time. After that, I think they'd move over to Slackware, unless they're still using dialup and don't want to order CD's....
