I personally don't know the exact definition of college Linux. But I do know that most distros can be customized to run on anything 486 and up. I'm quite sure with X you want more RAM, my guess is 128Mb would be a good idea.

Well really for any 486, I wouldn't recommend X at all. But if you do, you'd want to use as light a desktop as possible, no KDE or Gnome as well.

I'm rather curious what the advantages of College Linux are. I had never even heard of it until I saw it in these forums.

In other words,
why would I choose CL over other distros?

As a newbie, I wasn't too please with College Linux. For one thing the Kernel Source is missing, and for a newbie that's not always the best thing, especially when it comes time to install something looking for it. Also, I found that there were problems regarding mounting of CD drives and such, and...

Yeah, I found CL a pain, pretty much. If you want a newbie friendly Linux, check out Mepis. You can run it live and install from there if you so desire.

i had trouble with the boot loader though but after that pretty much everything is easy
