Upgrading from CentOS 7 to 8

I have a development machine that's CentOS 7 for compatibility reasons. Would CentOS 8 be just as compatible with CentOS 7 in production if I upgraded my CentOS 7 machine to 8?

CentOS 8 stops being supported in six months time.

If you don't want to stay on CentOS 7 (or switch to RHEL 8), you probably want to look at AlmaLinux or Oracle Linux.

From a production point of view CentOS 8's end of life is at the end of year and RH has changed their "focus". CentOS will become a rolling release called stream and be more of a development system then a production type server OS.

Without knowing anything specific about the software you are running it isn't possible to say if it is just as compatible but since it is going EOL I would not bother. There is a replacement called Almalinux and is currently in beta but I do not know when it will be released.

(They announced AlmaLinux 8.4 stable two weeks ago.)

Again: You ask about compatibility and cite "reasons" but do not specify. How is anyone going to be able to help you with that, beyond a very general chat about Redhat clones?

Just to add for anyone who passes by, RockyLinux is now on General Availability v8.4 https://rockylinux.org/news/rocky-linux-8-4-ga-release/.
This is the new free build by the the team that built Centos years ago.

I don't think that's an accurate statement - my understanding is that the team who co-founded CentOS were Rocky McGough, Gregory Kurtzer, John Newbigin, Lance Davis and Russ Herrold.

Gregory started Rocky Linux, naming the project in honour of Rocky McGough, who died.

None of the other co-founders are listed as members of the Rocky Enterprise Software Foundation (and I'm unaware how many of the people on that page were involved in CentOS).

Fair enough - I over-simplified....
