You should only need the server if you want people to connect to you.
What happens when you try to mount a share with smbmount?

If you know the machines name or the shares name you can navigate to it by entering in a file directory like konqueror
smb://MachineName/share
You can start the lisa demon and then use the LAN browser in konqueror to navigate to shares
You can use the LIN neighborhood in Gnome to reach shares
You can use smb4k to mount shares
You can make entries in you /etc/fstab to auto mount shares.
You need to edit your /etc/samba/smb.conf to allow users to accress the Linux box.

Thanks....
but what about the workgroup
even though i know the names of the computers, i need to know the domains in which they r present isn't it....
or it is so that samba server defaults to be present in the workgrp itself?

Hey Duff. You will need to change your workgroup setting to match whatever your current workgroup is setup to be. I believe in most recent Samba releases, it defaults to MYGROUP. Your distro may vary. This can be changed within /etc/samba/smb.conf. I first got off the ground with Samba with Webmin, then examining the smb.conf file to note the changes made.

Yeah, thanks.....I will try that!
But as far as i remember, i have already changed the workgrp using the GUI.
But i will need to check that stuff!
Also tell me whether the same stuff will work in Suse (I have 9.1)

Yes, it will. I believe YAST also has a module for Samba configuration. See:
http://www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/d...n/ch25s03.html
You may have to upgrade to 9.2, I know the Samba server module was a recent addition, I just do not remember which version this was released in.
