Hard Drive Install - Buffalo Linux
 

I just got Buffalo Live CD v. 1.7.2.6. It installed perfectly. I am *really* impressed by how far they have come from the older version. It's really state-of-the-art now!

Here's my question: How do I install it to my hard drive from the Live CD? I can't find anything about this in any of the menus.

Yep! The install icon is not present. ??

I would use cmnd line if I knew what the cmnd was. I had no problem with Knoppix Hard Drive install ... via cmnd line.

PS: Buffalo Linux is now at 1.7.3-4. As I said, I was amazed at how good it is compared to the early releases. Very professional.

I, too, have just run the new live cd.

I have the install icon. I get the choice of new or existing partition to install to. When I make a choice nothing happens. Any way to install via console?

Don't, worry, I've not given up on this thread - I downloaded the liveCD last night, and this afternoon when I get out of work I'll try it and see if I can figure something out.

There's *got* to be a coherent way to do this, and we'll find it yet :)

I'm not into live cds. Hope we can get it installed.

*sigh* well, I tried.

Believe me, I tried. But I could not get that CD to boot up any farther than "creating live filesystem" (and while it was sitting there, I noticed that it hadn't detected my sound card, which is an SB Live! and therefore shouldn't really have been undectable). I left it for 20 minutes, and it was still trying to create some sort of filesystem >_<

Therefore, since I'm clearly unable to fix this particular problem, the only advice I can give is this -- if you want a LiveCD, use Buffalo (since it seems to work for you :D). If you want an installation of a slackware-like linux distro, just install Slackware itself. You'll get the real thing, and won't be gimped by only having what was squeezed on a 650mb disk available to you.

Which version did u try to install to HD? I just ordered v. 1.7.3-4 May 8, '05.
I'll give it a whirl when I get it. Somewhere I recall seeing something about a 2 CD set? Maybe that's the thing to do the HD install.??

This new version from 1.7 on seems like a good one to use if they can get the bugs out. My hobby is trying out Linux Distros. So far I like Mepis best.

I downloaded the current version, 1.7.3-4 (the one linked from the front page of the website) :)

I don't know what its problem with my computer is, but I absolutely could not get it to boot up completely no matter how long I waited. Ditto the lack of sound card detection, which is really sort of strange.
Since it works for the others on this thread (including you, to judge by your profile), I'm concluding that it's my computer and not the distro...however, Slackware itself works perfectly so it may just be that the LiveCD is assuming something erroneously and is unable to compensate.

My vote still goes for installing a complete distro rather than from a liveCD, though.

I love trying out different distros too. I've got to agree with Esage about Mepis. Its my fave too. Very usable and out of box nvidia 3d acceleration really rocks.
Kanotix is real nice too. Also has a simple script for nvidia installs.

I've also started playing with Qilunux. It is quite professional for an unknown distro. Installs very well. Really poor support and documentation though. I've no idea what and if there is software available. They say nvidia and ati are supported during the install but I found not.

I have to give Symphony linux brownie points for ease of install and simplicity. A very basic, and simple desktop operating system. Very unique. Then again, no support or documentation to speak of.

It would be nice if more distros incorporated nvidia and ati drivers during installs. It would be nice if mouse support was better. I still cannot get my back and forward buttons to work.

It would be really nice if a developer of these distros participated more in the respective forums. Kanotix is great in this respect. You can get answers and help almost immediately right from the main man.

Good news! I got the Buffalo 1.7.3-4 Live CD. It booted perfectly. The Install Icon was on the desktop also. I clicked on the Install (to Hard Drive) and all went fine. Only thing I noticed was on my first try I did some other things with Buffalo (User Names, etc.)...and after that the Install didn't work. But on the reboot when I went *directly* to Install, then all went ok.

It's really a pretty neat distro. Now I can play around with it.

PS: But the Install still is not GUI; that needs fixed. :)

Good going! I may give it another try down the road but with another version.
