glad to hear you got it sorted

i had a good amount of screen tearing watching videos with firefox and vlc when using my nvidia gpu. i had to do a bit of searching to find the option that worked and it seems like it would work with whichever nvidia driver a system uses. if you run into that, feel free to post a new thread and i'd be happy to share what i found.

thank you for the info. that definitely feels like the piece i was missing. i was finally starting to get the idea that one card could have multiple outputs after reading this page also dealing with nvidia gpu's and hdmi output.

Really appreciate everything both @ferrari and you did for me.

From this morning installing nvidia driver and this afternoon, took a break for troubleshooting.

I watched some videos and they appeared clear and most importantly hear them. New computer is 100% functional. Thanks to the both of you.

more unsolicited , but

as a first time nvidia gpu owner/user/proprietary driver installer i wasn't at first aware that one could still use the nouveau driver even after installing the proprietary one. i had read about switching between nvidia and intel with something called prime, but couldn't figure out what that was. it turns out there is a setting in the nvidia x server settings program that was downloaded with the drivers that lets me choose. lspci -v should tell you which driver you are using if you haven't come across these settings already.
