MP4 videos won't play in Firefox/Bodhi Linux - fixed

MP4 videos on some websites wouldn't play in Firefox or Midori, using Bodhi Linux 4.5.0. "out of the box". No such problem with other Linux distributions. A bit of a challenge for a Linux user like me!
After much searching, head-scratching and updating, I installed VLC media player (via "System Updater"), and voila! MP4 videos now play in Firefox! (They still won't play in Midori though).
Perhaps installing VLC will help others with this MP4/Firefox problem.
I'm guessing that some missing Bodhi system software was installed as part of the VLC media player installation, so thanks VLC. But I do wonder why the latest Bodhi Linux/Firefox installation won't play MP4 videos "as is".
Apart from that, Bodhi is great so far.
Perhaps one of the "experts" can tell me what was missing from the Bodhi Linux/Firefox installation, which the VLC installation corrected.
Cheers

Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
This will install the needed codecs for viewing most formats of audio and video. Notice the restricted in that name, it means we can not freely install those on the Iso without risking legal issues. Something we don't want to have as we are all volunteers, spending free time to the project and getting "paid" by gratitude only.
VLC installs a similar set of codecs for its own software.

Thank you very much Charles.
I had seen this "fix" elsewhere but it was one of several solutions suggested for this MP4 problem. I discovered early on in my Linux journey that learners like me must be careful with all things "sudo"!
I hoped that installing VLC would do as you said re missing codecs, and fortunately it worked as hoped.
Thanks to you and everyone who give their time, we very much appreciate it.
