Midori v7 and Bookmark display / management - is this missing from the browser??

I note Midori v7 is now in the testing repo, and under evaluation for inclusion in the next Bodhi upgrade.

It does seem to be more crash-resistant that the version included with Bodhi 5.0. However, I'm seeing one problem and perhaps it should be resolved, before including it with 5.1?

Problem: while it saves Bookmarks, I have -- so far -- found no way of either displaying or managing them. Since I can't display them, I'm not able to use them to open a web site. Is this not the purpose of Bookmarks in a browser?

As this must be a shortcoming on my part, I have searched the Midori documentation and the internet for hints, without luck, and then emailed a request to the developer, using the address given on the Midori web site: support@midoriapp.com

Quote:

I am a Bodhi Linux user and it seems the developers over there are impressed with v.7.9 of your browser, and have posted a download link to its .deb file. However --

I can't find saved bookmarks, history and have no clue how to add a search engine.
The request is dated February 23 and so far, no reply.

Can someone give me a better email address or, better yet, can anyone who's running v7.9 take a look at it and tell me, where's the Menu item, or the shortcut key, to open a display of all the saved Bookmarks?

First of all thanks for testing this browser. I was unsure if any were testing it. It does seem more stable and usable.

But as you note:

Indeed that seems to be the case and it is not a shortcoming of your google or problem solving skills. I looked over the issues filed on github for this version of midori and the bookmarks or lack of is an open issue. The main developer has added this issue and a quite a few more to two different "milestone" lists. Unless I am also missing something this feature is not fully developed or restored in this rewrite of midori. So whether or not we will add this version to BL 5.1 is undetermined. You are certainly right in thinking this is a fundamental feature of a browser and perhaps until this issue is resolved we should hold off on updating midori ...

I will put some effort in talking to the developers this weekend hopefully and see what the time frame might be for this and hopefully possibly motivate them to restore this. The code itself is in a language I have never used nor had much interest in learning so I am going to try to resist the temptation of looking thru it myself and ....

But meanwhile bear in mind the greatest majority of this refactoring of midori has been done by one developer, kalikiana. So i have the greatest of respect for what has been accomplished so far and can only hope the development continues enough to make midori functional enough for daily usage. And that kalikiana doesn't "burn out".

EDIT: For the record I also downloaded the latest version present in github since a number of commits have been made since I created the deb file, and one commit I looked at did seem to have something to do with bookmarks. After a minor issue compiling it testing it out and still no bookmarks. A few more errors seem to be thrown out in stderr but anyways ...

Thanks for looking into this!

At the moment, since it crashes less (or maybe not at all?) than the older version, I'm leaving it installed but because of the limitations we both noted, I only use it for quickly looking up questions of terminal syntax, and so forth, and if I see something I want to remember, I copy that into Gnote.

But, I don't -- can't -- see it as a replacement for Firefox or Vivaldi, at least not in its current state.

As of today, I've had no reply from Midori support regarding the Bookmark situation in this browser.

Have you had better luck? Give us a heads-up if and when an updated file may be available for download.

Thanks for your offer to look into this!

The below quote from a midori dev is all I currently know:

Quote:

There is no Bookmark Edit per se. You can search for bookmarks by typing in the urlbar. In the resulting list, both bookmarks and history entries appear. There is a delete button next to each entry, to get rid of it.

And if you're on an already bookmarked document, the Bookmark button offers a command to delete the bookmark.
Maybe, a bookmark manager will be available as an extension in the future.
No time frame on a bookmark manager yet. But there is a newer version, but it doesn't address this issue. So I haven't been in any rush to package it.

Thanks for forwarding his reply and for taking the time to make contact. I suspected he might be more responsive to your request, than he was to mine. So, much appreciated!:hattip:

I am following the developer's directions on Bookmark use in Midori and it does work, after a fashion, so long as one does not need to see the Bookmarks listed and knows in advance what to start typing into the address bar.

Since Midori is intended as a 'placeholder' browser to give Bodhi basic internet access while the user decides on installing another, perhaps it is better to have the more-stable version 7, than it is to have an earlier less-stable version that is more prone to crashing on some web sites.

It is possible to open Bookmarks from another browser, in Midori, by exporting the Bookmarks to an html file, viewing that file in PCManFM, and in the context menu, selecting open the file, with Midori.

Time for another look?

By now, there are quite a few new versions.

The omission of a traditional Bookmark manager is not as bad as it first seemed. I have discovered that many browsers (e.g., Firefox, Vivaldi) can work this same way -- using the address bar instead of making selections from a list of bookmarks.

It seems to work well, once one becomes accustomed to it.

Version 8 is the same way. Still a good browser when compared with Dillo.
Which has bookmarks. But less content displayed .

Code:

How would one go about finding the address for a Debian Stretch repo containing midori v8 or the highest v7 releases, for 32-Bit Bodhi? I'm assuming you found a repo that will install Midori into
64-Bit Bodhi, if that's correct.

rokytnji 04-05-2019 07:03 PM

Yeah. The 32 bit thing is the catch Ron. Everyone is moving to 64 bit lately.

I guess you noticed my MX reading in code tags for Midori version 8.

Best I can dig up on short notice is

https://repology.org/project/midori/versions

rokytnji 04-05-2019 07:28 PM

In case this may help. I aint sure. I run AntiX. I use MX testing repos from time to time. I disable them after installing something. So as not screw with my libs when dist-upgrading like I do regular like.

Code:

harry@biker:/etc/apt
$ cd sources.list.d
harry@biker:/etc/apt/sources.list.d
$ ls
antix.list          debian.list                google-chrome.list  onion.list
antix.list.dpkg-old  debian-stable-updates.list  MX.list            various.list
harry@biker:/etc/apt/sources.list.d
$ cd MX.list
bash: cd: MX.list: Not a directory
harry@biker:/etc/apt/sources.list.d
$ cat MX.list
# MX Community Main and Test Repos

# deb http://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/ stretch main non-free

# deb http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/ stretch test

After enabling test repo in 32 bit bohdi. Use the apt-get update as usual to get everything shown. Then

Code:

apt search midori
to see what shows up. If no joy. Just comment out the MX repo.
Code:

sudo apt-get update
again

That will exclude the MX test packages you just populated synaptic with.
If you find joy.
Install Midori version 8 32 bit.

Then comment out MX repo and then apt-get update again to bring Bohdi back to stock. Like I said. I don't know about this . You will have to blaze a trail for other bohdi users I guess.

Lastly.
On their wiki. They say
Quote:

Midori can be run without being installed.
from:
https://wiki.xfce.org/midori/contribute

Quote:

You can use a temporary folder for testing without affecting normal settings
But all this is the deep side of the pool for some.

There appears to be a snap of version 7.34

Unrelated, I observed what appears to be a bug when trying to grab that image.... if I perform "Take Shot" on the gnome-software window by right-clicking on Flatpak Software in the taskbar, it shows what was behind the window, not the actual window. I had to printscreen my whole desktop to get it...
