Laptop Backlight Slider Gadget
 

Nothing happens immediately when I adjust the slider.

However if I adjust it then reboot, it then takes affect; for example if I turn it all the way down and reboot, it's completely dim, and I can't turn it back up again without turning it up and rebooting.

The laptop is a Sony VAIO VPCF115FM if that helps, as I assume this is not expected behavior, but no idea how to troubleshoot as I think that is a bodhi specific thing so can't go searching for info...

I did try an alternative app but it just adjusted the brightness/contrast somehow in an attempt to dim that was somewhat effective, but not the actual hardware backlight so not what I want and certainly not useful for power savings.

Have you tried the keys for backlight or redefining them in key binding settings? In my case it is the last chance (I mean slider) how to make some NTBs backlight control. I have never had the issue you described.

The Sony default keys, Fn+F5/F6 don't respond. I checked key bindings and was surprised to learn Bodhi has already bound them. When I tried to add Fn+F5 it identified it as XF86MonBrightnessDown and already bound to Backlight Down, as was the up. And binding another key to Backlight Down didn't do anything different. The keys also change the brightness level if I check the slider gadget after keypresses. So not the problem.

I did consider installing acpi-support package but not sure if that was the right track. I've already tried installing a couple other solutions and not sure how much is left behind installing and purging apps...

Which Bodhi version do you have installed? I have also one Sony Vaio, old one, and I had to install bl 4.5 legacy for covering almost all features. The only issue which stayed unsolved is wake up after suspend.

EDIT: maybe in your case is fine just changing the kernel version. Try an older one...

This vaio isn't super old, but certainly not brand new. Running 5.0 64-bit. Older kernel you say... hmmmm. I'll try that acpi-support package first, then try older kernels.

try to unbind the keys, maybe the laptop will take care of them "itself"?
i'm not sure about this, but i think some of these laptop function keys work on a level below the operating system.

I unbound both keys in bindings to no affect.

There is also acpi bindings. I unbbound brightness up and brightness down. Also no affect.

Not sure why you're requiring proof, it's not like I'd make up that I tried it. But anyways I'll answer.

Bindings are in settings/settings panel/input.

For key bindings, I selected add, pushed fn+f6, which brought me to XF86MonBrigthnessUp. I then pushed delete. Repeat for XFMonBrightnessDown. Apply. Close. After this, the slider no longer moves when I make adjustments, as well as backlight still not changing.

For ACPI bindings I selected Brigthness Up and pushed delete. repeat for brightness down. Apply. Close.

i agree there's not much new information in your description.

with what we have, i guess this is not an operating system problem.
undo all the changes you made, and concentrate on ACPI issues.
try some search terms like "ubuntu acpi <make_model_of_computer>" etc.
there are even some kernel command line options for backlight, iirc "backlight=vendor" or some such.
check it out.
