hello,
earlier today i was trying to install a couple different browsers from their deb files. i got the gdeb installer to open and it did it's thing about finding dependencies, but when i clicked install, absolutely nothing happened.

i was doing this on an older, 32bit machine, and was trying to install the vilvaldi and slimjet browsers. yes, i had downloaded the 32bit deb file of those browsers, NOT the 64bit!

anyone have any idea why they wouldn't work?

would be nice to tell us your OS, what did you download (at least).
Did you try to run gdebi as root?

I am assuming you are running Bodhi linux 5.1. If so and all packages are up to date, see my post on esudo changes.

duh! thought for sure i put in what i was running. yes, bodhi 5. not sure if it's 5.1 or not. what did i download? that part i did put in. says right there, vivaldi and slimjet, 32bit deb files. all packages are up to date.

Does the .deb file for Vivaldi exactly match the name of the one found at this link?

Other ideas:
Install .deb file from command line
Reinstall Gdebi, and try it again.

P.S.: When doing something in terminal, that failed with a GUI app, you'll often see, not only error messages, but hints as to how to work-around whatever went wrong.

For example, Vivaldi: The first time you run it, do so from terminal. Reason: Vivaldi, out of the box, may not handle certain types of video files without a separate download. In terminal, you'll see exactly what's missing, if you don't have it, and what you must do to install it.

This info is not easy to find and 'drove me nuts' at first. But, your system may already have the necessary download, and in that case, just disregard this precaution!

P.P.S.: On my (older, 32-bit) 'netbook' Vivaldi seems to run a bit better than Firefox. No idea why ... but this may also apply to your "older, 32-bit machine".

that link gets me an error 404 file not found.

giving up on this as nothing seems to work. going to assume these 2 browsers aren't compatible with bodhi. reinstalled gdeb and tried. same thing. nothing happens after gdeb open. trying the command line says file not found!

think i'm going to put linux mint back on this machine.

The file name being boldfaced, for clarity, seems to have corrupted the line, preventing it from being used 'as a link'.

I tried it because I was curious as to what could have happened. To start the download, one would have to 'Select' the entire line, copy it, then paste it into a browser's address bar. It works only if the link one places in the address bar includes the file name.

Sorry about that, but the point of the post was only so that you could compare the filename, as shown in boldface, with the name of the file you had already downloaded and attempted to install.

P.S.: The original post works as a link now, but you wouldn't be able to see the filename for comparison, with what you already downloaded. For that, you'd have to refer to the 'quote' in your post, which preserves its original form.
