you should be able to remove a program with sudo apt remove <nameofprogram>. you could also use sudo apt purge <nameofprogram> if you want to get rid of the config files with it. i couldn't find a download candidate for nautilus so if sudo apt remove nautilus doesn't work you could try apt list nautilus to get the proper program name to remove.

as far as synaptic goes, have you tried sudo synaptic in a terminal? i don't have a legacy bodhi install right now, but often use synaptic in 64-bit.

corex, really appreciate your swift reply! Yes, i use always use Synaptic with my "regular" computers, which all have PCLinuxOS on them. Will give your suggestions a try. This lappy is a gift from our daughter to a friend. It had Win7 on it, but - yuck - had to get a copy of some Linux distro on it and finally was able to do so with Bohdi legacy. A bit of a bear, but worth it. Now have LibreOffice and VLC so almost good to go.

Have a radiant morn!

I think for synaptic/etc to work right from gui, you have to enable 'policykit authentication agent' in settings / apps / startup apps.
