How to put on the desktop icons for the apps to be launched?

I am setting up a PC for my grandparents.

They have to do nothing save launching their email and an internet browser.

I wanted to set up therefore a very simple desktop with only three icons, for the mail program, the internet browser, and the on and off to shutdown.

I want it in such a way that they can do nothing else.

It seems stupid, but I cannot find a way to do that.

I understand that you have to set an IBAR gadget in a shelf. In this way I can actually place icons where I want, but I am not able yo fix them in place: each time I accidentally drag and drop, they disappear.

Moreover, I managed to move the launcher icon on the center of the desktop, and that one, that I really want to remove, stays there whatever I do!!
I even thrashed the shelf it was in, but that icon stays there.

I begin to feel really stupid...

Hello there

Let's prepare the desktop for your grandparents

Menu->Settings->Modules->Files(tab)->Desktop icons(load)

Now everything you place to the home/user/Desktop folder will be shown on the desktop. So, copy your three app.desktop files from /usr/share/applications directory to the desktop directory.

I hope I explained it correctly. Feel free to ask...

Štefan

Another way is to use another ibar on another shelf. You can make the shelf invisible then it just looks like icons on the desktop, make the shelf as big as you want to resize the icons. And you can lock them so they don't move around or aren't accidentally deleted etc. On my kids computer I've got an ibar along the top and an ibar along the left side filled with the apps they use.

OK, that's what I have been trying to do from the beginning, but... How do you lock them? I tried all the settings I could find, but they keep moving around and disappearing...

Can somebody advise how to delete that troublesome icon? I originally placed it in a shelf (with its specific gadget), then I "began to move things around", like mocha says, and dragged it out from the shelf and in the middle of my destop.
And there it stays, no matter what I do.
I even deleted the shelf in which I had placed it in the first place. Nothing. It seems to have become a permanent part of my desktop...

I will really give it a try this evening, thanks. I will keep you posted.

Thanks again.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by launcher icon. You mean the start button? or a desktop file (shortcut) to an application?

This may be obvious, but have you tried right clicking on it, see if any useful options come up? Or maybe try dragging it back to a shelf then try right clicking on it?

If you turned on desktop icons, and there are files in ~/desktop then they will appear on your desktop too... but those can easily be dragged around or deleted so doesn't sound like your issue.

Maybe a screenshot would help us understand? If you push printscreen by default it brings up ephoto, right click on the pic and you can upload and get a link... i.e. https://i.imgur.com/P6JDbtZ.jpg is my kids desktop; one ibar on the left with all their linux games, one ibar ont he top with all their psx/snes games.
