Default Browser

How would you feel about Epiphany being replaced with Firefox as the default? I welcome all opinions so thank you for your time in this!

I would feel fine about it personally.

But I don't think it's going to happen. They already include Firefox with the apppack release. And the regular releases they want to keep small and let people install whatever browser they want. People can then remove epiphany if they want.

If you want to remove epiphany use this package name:

sudo apt purge epiphany-browser

Because there is also epiphany deb which is a different application (game).

Epiphany

Epiphany isn't a good choice. It's updated less frequently than something like Firefox or Chromium. A web browser is one of the most important thing that needs to be getting regular security updates...Pale Moon can be a good compromise, since it's just Firefox without the bloat...

counterpoint: It doesn't matter since the user is expected to install a "real" browser, just like they're expected to install a PDF reader. Therefore, the smallest footprint that supports the App Center is the best choice.

Pale Moon Ranked Number One

When comparing Pale Moon vs GNOME Web, Pale Moon is ranked number 1 while GNOME Web is ranked 24...Pale Moon is the clear winner!

I've suggested palemoon as the default browser actually, its what I use as primary browser on my legacy machine. They did add it to bodhi repos tho, as its not in ubuntu repos, to allow for easy install.

This release (5.1) is the first one with epiphany. They used to include an even worse browser, midori, the old versions wouldn't even work on many websites. At least it seems like this epiphany browser works.

But yeah the point of bodhi is install whatever browser you like. I personally use Firefox as my primary browser, but also have Chrome installed for when I need another browser as a sanity check for flakey website, or when I want to cast youtube or voice search.

Palemoon & Firefox

I love both Pale Moon & Firefox they are both excellent!

Epiphany

Epiphany freezes up computers as I have gotten several complaints from friends & family they are calling Epiphany a piece of useless junk.

I use several browsers on my PCS, and I use Pale Moon as my default on my Win 10 desktop. I did recently replace Midori with Epiphany and so far I like the move. Epiphany seems more reliable compared to Midori and I access this forum with it. My opinion: Epiphany is a better default install choice. Tab behavior is good from the get go. 'Seems' leaner and faster, too. Again, I also have Firefox, Vivaldi (sometimes printing from a web page gives me trouble in this browser), and Falkon (my default search browser w ASK.com in bodhi).

+1

Bodhi should be, and is, as lightweight as possible by default. Epiphany is therefore a fine choice. You can simply install Firefox, Chromium and/or Chrome etc. afterwards.

I have never had Epiphany freeze my computer when I used it for a couple days, but it does use a Lot of memory which slowed down the PC.
I found that Falkon is a good lightweight Web Browser.

I would rate them as follows:
Number 1. Pale Moon
Number 2. Firefox ESR
Number 3. Falkon

I would point out that Firefox, Web, and Midori (and the various variants of them such as Pale Moon, Waterfox, etc) are the only browsers out there not using chromium code at the present time. We should support any and all of these.
