Back to the Forum for a minute, I was a little put off that I had to enter my/a birth date. It's a bit of a (slight) vulnerability and I fail to see what use that information has.
I think that might be a GDPR or some law thing, have to be 13 years old for some data stuff or something?
Could be wrong. But other than that, yeah not needed for a forum, but t's not like you have to put your real birthday there anyway... I guess I'm so used to it I don't even remember that being a question to sign up!
Forums are GDPR compliant these days. They export data and can delete data per username. There are plugins (if not defaults) for all the major forum scripts.
(A long time ago, I used to "officially" help out the SMF project. So, I remain moderately curious.)

A forum can be GDPR compliant without having to ask your age, but I'm guessing that the company that provides the platform does business with your data and to be able to give your permission to that you have to be a certain age... doesn't facebook also have sth like that? So it could be "some law thing".
There is a new terminology in the BL 5.x repos, but I am moving all future announcements of things like this to the new forums. So please join if you wish to stay informed of stuff like this. As said before support will be still be offered here. Thanks
