BL5-64bit - Skype again! How to start it minimized to tray, please?
I installed Skypeforlinux in BL5-64bit according to this guide.
But again, like on my earlier attempts, I still cannot start it minimized to tray. There's an option in Skype, meant to do this, called "Start Skype in background", but that one doesn't work in BL5 (it does in other distros, though). Instead, when that option is enabled, only an empty frame of the Skype window pops up and I get stuck in this situation. To get out of this state, I have to kill Skype using Exterminator. So, how can I get Skype into the tray when it's started, please? |
You are talking about a closed source app. Without the source code how am I to debug this issue? It complicates things extremely for me so much so that I can't put any time into that. If you know of some code change we can make to moksha to make this work, patches accepted. Other than that my advice is to use open source software and stay away from anything proprietary. Sorry.

Actually, I was looking for some sort of "external" script to automatically click
the close button at the upper right corner of Skype. By doing this, Skype is minimized to tray, but still running, when the option "Keep it running after closing it" is enabled, which is what I'm looking for. Let my add one more question regarding this: Why is it working fine for other distros, but not for BL5? This makes me think, it's not Skype's fault, but looks like there is something missing in BL5. |

probably -iconic works. From the other hand you may try to send X event[s] to the skype window to minimize. |
I posted something similar about qbittorrent, which is in fact open source. I described the odd behaviour in another post long ago.
It seems any app you set to minimize to tray or start minimized to tray doesn't behave as expected under bodhi. Are there any apps at all that will startup in tray or minimize to tray that actually behave as one would expect? |

I think the difference with nm-applet, is that it has no regular windowed app, its mainly a tray app (alhtough I realize going into 'edit connections' brings up an app that appears in taskman). I'm sure I'm describing it wrong, but maybe you'll get the idea.
Install qb and set it to start automatically minimized, then reboot, and see what happens. You'll see. Or set it to minimize to taskbar and see the odd things that happen. |
Yes, I can confirm the empty skype frame after its start.
