Apps not running correctly or at all and OS seems to be slowing down
 

Just wanted to start off with saying hello to the Bodhi Community! This is my first distro ever (I know, get the newbie jokes in) and I needed to bring back to life several machines for my job but 1: Windows 10 would is a resource whore, 2: Windows 10 costs just as much as a high end hooker, and 3: I wanted simple, functionality, the ability to be adaptable or customizable without it have hundred running background applications such as Windows 10 would have. (Really Windows? Why would I need your Xbox functions running on my computer…) Long story short, I downloaded Bodhi and this OS brought back to life my old laptop that I thought was a brick. I loved/love that laptop and now because of this OS, I have it back. Even though by tech standards, it’s very out dated, but if you ask any Star Trek guru. They would take the older Enterprise over the new fancy versions. Now that I have brought back to life three machines with Linux (This one running Bodhi, another is running Zorin, and the 3rd is running Pop!) I am trying my best to absorb as much Linux information as fast as I can. (should have seen my face when I had to use the terminal the first time) Now onward to the questions!

When I installed Bodhi, it ran perfectly out of the gate. Now I have only done some minor work on the Laptop and used the Bodhi app center for all my app needs. Now since this is my first go at Linux, I knew there would be some “What the hell did I just do” moments.

My first question: While doing my research and looking for needed apps to install on my systems. I went and tried to install “Stacer” on my laptop. Followed the instructions on how to install it and when you try to activate the program. It fails to open every time, and I keep getting the message “Moksha was unable to run the program” – “This application failed to start”. Now I keep searching all over to see if Stacer is not compatible with Bodhi but I have not found anything of such in my searches. (This is where the whole new to Linux is kicking my butt) Am I installing the application incorrectly or is it a factor that it was not simply designed to run with this OS?

2nd Question: If Stacer is not designed for this OS, what app or apps or even actions would you recommend to help maintain my system?

3rd Question: After a month of use, I have noticed Bodhi has slowed down a tad in the response department. When I click on an application, it takes a few seconds for it to open up or I will have to re-double click to get it to open. Sadly, as I am typing this, it would not properly load the Bodhi website, preventing me to get to the forums and I was forced to use my Windows 10 machine to talk to all of you (put down your pitch forks and torches….) My internet connection is hard wire, as I try to stay away from using Wifi. (Download speed: 105.6 and Upload speed: 45.9 on the laptop) The only non-app center app I have installed other than Stacer on this machine was Conky Manager. This kinda goes back to my other questions, since they share the same theme. Is there an action, command or application that will help me wake up this old war horse or have I screwed things up and will have to reinstall Bodhi? (I know how fragile Windows is and everyone keeps telling me that Linux is built like a M1 Abrams Tank)

Last Question…for now… What apps would all of you recommend? I use this laptop as a backup unit to my main system (my desk is a configured in a U shape, allowing me to have a computer on each side) and this laptop runs my communications for my gaming such as posting to the developer websites forum, posting updates to my teams Discord, maintaining the teams online calendar and schedule ect. Main reason why I picked bodhi was due to the clean look it provided and the sleek design of the menus. Should I just scrap it and install 5.0 that is available?

I do thank any who have taken the time to read through all of this and provided any insight on the matter. Also if you have any suggestions, apps I should try out, or just want to be friends, I’m game!

Try preload
and bleachbit

Run bleachbit as root.

Stacer works on Bodhi. I am unsure why it is not working for you. Start it in a terminal and post the output here.

For linux cleaning and maintenance, you need both bleachbit and stacer. Stacer may have played hard to get (Lubuntu), but you should be able to get it working on bodhi.

As for system responsiveness, the NSA and systemd is to blame. Specifically rsyslog and systemd-journald tend to use way too much CPU which is suspicious, therefore I have disabled these both for high cpu usage and backdoor plausibility. Since then my system runs like a dream. Between both, I saw cpu usage of 25% when I caught it, it probably went higher.

Still awaiting uEFI support, hopefully it comes out in Bohdi 5.00

I am sorry about the duration of my lack of answering back. I had to shut down my internet as the AC Adapter connecting to my modem "blew up" and had a lengthy talk with my cable provider on how their "expert" almost burn down my house. Well I have Bleachbit installed and running smooth, Thank you for that advice! As for stacer, it's still fighting me and I will be posting a update in the morning as I go to work on this machine.
