Hello,
We would really appreciate it when Writemonkey would be added to the appcenter.
Thanks in advance,
Will
It looks like an interesting app, but It is not open source and the zip file contains a binary executable. I can't add something like that to the app center. It is unknown to me whether it is even safe to run it. Sorry on that and hope you understand.
That being said if it is not working for you please provide details. Maybe we can help.
I just downloaded the Linux .zip file and followed the 'installation' instructions. I believe I am seeing the same problems that Will1969 is seeing. Off the top of my head, it looks to me as if the developers just renamed the Windows .zip file and wrongly believed that all that was necessary was to copy to a folder in linux and the program would run. This 'nw' file is supposed to be the executable but does not look like any linux program I have ever seen. This certainly does not look to be a linux installation package. The other possibility could be permission issues (accessing properties for the 'nw' file shows that user has permission to execute. Have not tried with sudo in a terminal yet though. If that manages to solve the execution issue I will certainly update info.
According to attempts to execute 'nw' either as user or with sudo, it is not recognized as a command. I do not know if compiling is possible, but I doubt it with the files in the folder. I just happen to believe the developers have more work to do to actually port to linux.
^ well, I do have a flatrate, and 100MB isn't that much to download.
But it's simple: not being opensource, it won't likely be added to the repositories. Not Ubuntu's, not Bodhi's.
And there's other markdown editors.
Rant warning:
I don't see the point of markdown editors - the rendered HTML will look different on every machine anyhow, and the whole point of markdown is to be readable as it is, and dead simple to write.
That said, my code editor has syntax highlighting form markdown, which is good.
I thought I would try to run Writemonkey thru wine (using the Windows install). No success, however others better than I may be able to make it work. Wine just showed a great deal of errors to me and did not even open the application in a window. While this looked to be an interesting program (and I may try on my windows install), I personally believe that this program is not gonna run on linux without some developer involvement. Others have noted in this thread that this program is not open source and therefore getting this to run in linux is gonna be a herculean task. Sorry, guys I tried.
