[Canceled] Investigate Possible Posting Bug

Note: To anyone who reads this, these are my personal notes on a problem I suspect I have found. I am not done with my research into it, so I am not officially reporting the issue till I understand it. Right now, these are just my personal notes.

Test Requirements:
1) Identify a post from another member that contains a quote.

2) In another tab/window. Go to "My LQ", the "Edit Options" (under the "Settings & Options" menu in
the left-hand column).

In the last section, "Miscellaneous Options", there's a sub-section titled
"Messge Editor Interface".
Select "Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing"

NOTE: This doesn't appear to be required to trigger the "bug".

3) Hit the quote button, to quote the post that contains a quote.

Platform(s) Tested:
FireFox 3.0.8 on WinXP.
NoScript blocking google-analytics.com & d1.openx.org

Problem:
When quoting a post that contains a quote, the quoted text inside the quoted post (sometimes?) fails to show up in the post editor.

To Do:

- Search forum and find out if this is a known issue.

- If no previous bug report exists, determine procedure for filing.

- File bug report if previous one does not exist.

Update #1:
The "Quoting a post with a quote in it" issue popped-up again, but with "Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls" set. Occurred when quoting Post #627, which contained a quote from Post #626
Interesting side-note. Post #627 seemes to have been customized (was not generated with the quote button?).
Also, Post #626 was from root. Perhaps this is only a problem with a root post?

I also see that I have 23 page views...strange. I thought I had this blog post tagged to keep it on the down-low until my research is complete (and I know if/how to post a bug report). Perhaps the moderators have checked it out? (or people are looking at my "Blog Posts: 1" under my info when I post...)

Update #2
Hm, the quote-bug popped-up again. This time when using the quote button on my own post (#632, which contained a quote from root). I still have "Standard Editor - Extra formatting controls" set.

Update #3
This "bug" (feature?) seems to go both ways;
When quoting Post #634 (root's, which contains a quote from Post #632.

I'm up to 32 views in the span of less than an hour....I wonder if I'm incrementing the counter unknowningly...Changed "bug" to "Prawblem", probably just showing up in the search results or something...

Update #4

Well, turns out this is a known 'problem'. Basically the nested quoting feature of the site is turned off;

For instance, on this post, hitting 'quote' produces 'done' which is meaningless and I have to manually copy'n'paste what is done and wrap quote tags around it. This issue comes up for me frequently. I get that people would then need to trim quotes if it got unnecessarily nested but then others could down-rep them if they don't. Or maybe provide options for 'quote' and 'full quote'.

I think what have have makes sense for the majority of use cases. It's possible we'll change it at some point, but we have no plans to do so at this time. if it's something you'd like to get feedback from other members on, you should post a dedicated thread. --Jeremy
