Back to the world of the living

Posted 07-04-2011 at 12:28 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I originally started blogging as an experiment, but soon lost the time to write regular entries. Eventually this blog decayed and died. Ever since I have been wanting to write but have never found myself at a computer at the right time.

From now on I am starting a regular blogging routine of more than two posts per week. Expect to start seeing some of my shell scripts, reviews of software and opinions on all things in the virtual world to start coming out of this blog again....

External harddrive speed woes

Posted 02-22-2011 at 01:31 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

A few minutes ago I was preparing to distribute video encoding of files on my portable harddrive across multiple computers in the house. Just to get the quality and codec settings right before I finished, I started encoding one of the videos on only my main computer.

I'm glad I ran this test.

At first when encoding, I noticed the second CPU wasn't being used. I thought perhaps the encoder wasn't designed to be multi-threaded, but that would be ridiculous. I decided...

Homebrew paranoia frontend ( CLI ) for audiobooks

Posted 02-19-2011 at 05:16 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I've had my troubles with GUI audio CD rippers lately, whether it be DBUS connection issues or lack of 'codecs' for cdda or wav ( sounds as weird as it is ). On top of that the rip-one-at-a-time strategy was too time consuming for the repetitive audio book ripping I am doing, which involved placing four disc rips under the same title.

So I wrote a shell script that does most of the work for me

Code:
#!/bin/bash

Red Router

Posted 01-26-2011 at 09:46 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I've just obtained a new router from my ISP after the older one started to have problems. The new one is bigger and uglier, but shares the same webUI.

On the previous router a portscan revealed port 23 for telnet was available, but the router just refused my connection when I tried to connect to it. The newer router only reports two open ports, and they are both for net traffic:
Code:
Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-01-20 18:02 EST
Interesting ports on 192.168.0.1:

Screen 'not connected'? Where's the PVA...

Posted 01-26-2011 at 09:34 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

My screen on my Thinkpad 600 recently died and I believe its backlight has finally given way. While troubleshooting the problem I discovered some very interesting things about my Thinkpad.

It all started with the Thinkpad 600 hardware maintenance manual which I found on the web after a brief google. It contained key combinations that allowed me to access advanced information in the 'Simple' BIOS.

It turns out my Thinkpad is a very modular system, with all modules...
