No sound in Oracle virtualbox

I run oracle virtualbox to run XP for one program for which there is no comparable Linux equivalent. I use to have sound working when I had debian 7 installed. But with debian 8 sound on a prexisting image does not work the virtual device is only recognized as a pci device which means XP's plug and play feature will not work.

The problem? I was using the K desktop and just about everything I have ever seen in linux is usually developed with Gnome in mind. The solution? Install Gnome...

Delete your xorg.conf and reboot.

Actually, I just logged in as root and moved it to my home folder. I wanted to compare the new configuration file, which gets autogenerated, to the mangled config, which got that way when I tried to get Jedi Outcast running.

I did have to reset the resolution as it was on 640 x 480 (This is the default resolution for Jedi I think)

This is something in which there is no windows equivalent. Which for some nerdy...

Debian Jessie - 3 weeks in

Well, I've been using Jessie for about 3 weeks now and after a rocky start, everything is going smoother. Samba was not a big all night process this time since I backed up my /etc folder before doing a fresh install (along with my home folder of course).

Cinlerra & Firefox installed without a hitch since as of right now they are just downloadable binaries. Audacity, and Avidemux would not install without first upgrading some libraries. I believe this might have been due to an...

Basically the debian install partition manager doesn't work. How in the world can you release an install image when the partition manager refuses to format the partitions you create?! I had to create the partitions, reboot into a gparted live bootable usb, format them, reboot into debian 8.1 to specify how to mount the damn partitions!

The other annoying thing, but this one is miniscule. Even though I downloaded a non free firmware iso, I still had to download the correct...

Windows 10 upgrade for all you dual booters

Avoid windows 10 like the plague. I did an upgrade instead of a clean install. Jedi knight doesn't work at all (I really like DF2), Oblivion IV is actually slower, and my sound doesn't work.

8 gigs ram
nvs 3100m

These are actually pretty decent specs. I could see Oblivion not working, but Jedi?

Fortunately I have a disk image. It will be restored tonight.
