On Ubuntu

Posted 01-18-2016 at 11:23 PM by wagscat123

I started using Ubuntu when it gained popularity before Unity, MIR, and even the Ubuntu Software Center. There was just Synaptic and the apt stuff, and GNOME 2.
It was an updated version of Debian with Wubi, Ubiquity, and polish that made things "just work". This made it catch on fire, and become a good place for newbs and casual users. And from Debian it inherited a huge amount of compatibility, stability, and familiarity with experienced users.
Ubuntu has had to figure...

Reviving a teenage Mac with Debian

Posted 05-25-2015 at 08:32 PM by wagscat123

So my newer laptop that ran openSUSE 13.2 got an LCD cable in it pinched off, and the new parts and a open heart surgery-like repair awaits this laptop from 2011.

But I wanted to be able to surf the web with a mouse in the library, in lounges, and not be trapped to my dorm. So I dug up a 1999 PowerBook G3 "Lombard" that we were given in 2005, and downloaded some Debian.

I did this back in 2012 with Debian 6.0 and XFCE, but with no motive beyond pure curiosity.....

Trying to Chain of Fools Fedora

Posted 06-14-2012 at 05:49 PM by wagscat123

I tried to perform a chain of fools style experiment (upgrading through every version of Fedora from 1 to 17) of Fedora in VirtualBox. It went great, chugging along right up through Fedora 1-8. Once I got to Fedora 9, the menu functions and keyboard input began to get weird, and by Fedora 10 the cursor froze upon X startup. I have ran into this issue when Chain of Foolin' around before in both SUSE and Fedora and couldn't get a solution (even when asking here). I might do a command prompt Chain...

Old SUSE Linux in VBox

Posted 05-11-2012 at 08:25 PM by wagscat123
Updated 05-11-2012 at 08:27 PM by wagscat123

I've ran and test SUSE 7.1 and 7.3 and later in VirtualBox. Here's some notes about each
7.1 - Offers KDE 1.1 and 2.0 and Kernel 2.2/2.4. GNOME 1.2. Only 640x480 with 16 colors with XFree86 4. Includes as both Sax1 and SaX2 and Yast1 and YaST2. You may have to fight the sound server, but it works well once you have it fired up. This is the only one older than 9.2 I installed from an Install CD instead of an FTP server.
7.3 - KDE 2.2 and GNOME 1.4. Same video resolution and...

The Great GNOME Schism

Posted 02-10-2012 at 10:31 PM by wagscat123

I personally switched back to KDE in wake of 12.1 approaching over the summer. GNOME 3 isn't too bad for me, just different and weird, and if was tweaked a little might be good. In the past,
(starting with KDE 2.5\GNOME 2.16) I've bounced around between the two and have voted differently over the years. I've always used SUSE though.
Comparing LQ Members Choice Awards this year to last year, there seems to be a Great Schism in GNOME. KDE has kept about the same amount of votes, while...
