SuSE Linux 8.1 was released September 30, 2002.

It brought with it several new features. The venerable GNOME 2 debuted in this release. GNOME 2.0 saw a new look and feel for GNOME, and simplified several features. Some components such as the Terminal saw a complete re-write, and Metacity became the window manager. GNOME would not have a major new release series for almost another decade, until the controversial redesign of GNOME 3.0. Today's MATE desktop environment is a continuation of the functionality and design of GNOME 2.

CUPS, the C Unix Printing System, written by Apple, was introduced in this release and remains the most common printing system in most Linux distributions today. GRUB also replaced LILO as the default boot loader, bringing with it an easy to edit configuration file (menu.lst) that I miss in the GRUB 2 era.

Throughout 2001 Mac OS X and Windows XP brought major albeit cartoonish improvements in their default icon sets, themes, and interfaces known respectively as Aqua and the rather colorful Luna. Although the Keramik theme and Crystal icon set did not become default in upstream KDE until KDE 3.1, SuSE apparently found a way to include the theme in which KDE followed in the footsteps of other graphical interfaces at the time. Finally, I test drove the first version of that I found in SuSE. It feels very much like a middle step between the 2 that I first used and the StarOffice I saw in previous releases. It still saves in the StarOffice format and does not use KDE or GNOME themes.

In Linux distributions from about 2002 onwards I don't have to find some hack to get graphics to function properly. After setting the OS to Linux kernel 2.4 in the VirtualBox New VM wizard, there were no hiccups with set up and installation.
