SuSE Linux 7.1: Into the 21st Century in VirtualBox

Look it up - the 21st century technically didn't start until 2001 as there was no year 0 CE. So SuSE Linux 7.1, released January 24, 2001, was the first version of SuSE Linux released in the current century.

SuSE Linux 7.1, likely as a transitional measure, included both KDE 1.1.2 and KDE 2.0.1. KDE 2 was a significant rewrite of KDE as well as a significant change to its interface and overall look. KDE 2 makes a login sound but struggles to log out, and KDE 1 and GNOME can only be accessed by selecting the "Failsafe" option in kdm and starting each desktop with "kde1" and "gnome-session" respectively. I was able to play the test audio file in YaST2, and fire up StarOffice.

Today's LibreOffice, the standard open source office suite, is based on the now defunct OpenOffice.org suite that was developed by Sun (and briefly Oracle) from 2002 to 2011. OpenOffice.org was in turn an open source continuation of StarOffice's development. StarOffice Writer 5.2, as included in SuSE Linux 7.1, didn't seem superficially different than early versions of OpenOffice.org Writer, and used the same default word document format.

To get graphics, I passed the option "vga=791" at boot time (i.e. type "suse vga=791" at the boot prompt). The default runlevel was set to 3, so that I could log in as root and run "kdm" since I could not figure out how to change the default display manager from xdm to kdm.

If installing SuSE Linux 7.1, be sure to re-run SaX2 and have it create a new default configuration after booting with the boot option "vga=791" entered into the boot prompt. After setting the OS to Linux kernel 2.2 in the VirtualBox New VM wizard, there were little hiccups with set up and installation. If a 1024x768 doesn't resolution suit your needs, you can pass a different VGA mode from here: https://www.pendrivelinux.com/vga-bo...en-resolution/
