SUSE Linux 10.1 was released May 11, 2006. This version of SUSE Linux was the basis for SUSE Linux Enterprise 10. SUSE Linux 10.1 is also unique in that the openSUSE project released a re-mastered version of the install media that included all updates released since the initial 10.1 release.

KDE was upgraded to version 3.5, which would be its final version upgrade for a few years until KDE 4 shocked the world. GNOME saw significant changes to its interface, with the default layout again being changed to one panel and the introduction of the Gilouche theme. Significant features added to this release were Xgl, which brought support for hardware acceleration and graphic effects. NetworkManager was also added to this release, allowing for much simpler configuration of network interfaces and connections. NetworkManager is still part of the distribution today. A final version of 2 was also included.

My first Linux distribution was a Linux Starter kit with a manual and a SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 install DVD. Since SUSE Linux 10.1 is quite similar to my starting distro, I played around a bit and pulled up one of my favorite games that was later removed.

When setting up this version of SUSE Linux, in VirtualBox's new Virtual Machine wizard I selected "openSUSE (32-bit)" as the operating system. Note however that the hard disk will be SATA by default. You will have to go into the machine's settings and change the hard disk controller from SATA to IDE in order for SUSE Linux to recognize the hard disk. I also suggest going into the Input menu and unselect "Mouse Integration".
