The next version of S.u.S.E. Linux still available for download on the web version 5.2, released March 23, 1998.

While KDE is much more barren than even in its 1.0 release, it is much more usable compared to 5.2, and as a user familiar to KDE whose used the desktop environment since its 3.x series, I feel more comfortable using it than FVWM. FVWM is still available and comfortable to use.

Many of the KDE utilities and accessories, like a Paint program, text editor, and web browser were still under development or not available yet. I find it remarkable that there were many more utilities that seem to have come with the X window system (like today's xeyes, xterm, and xpdf) that were shipped with Linux distributions back then. I tinkered with the xedit for a bit. I wonder if LinuxMint's current X-Apps project accidentally duplicates one of the program names. YaST did not appear much different, although the user settings were showing up in German. If someone who knows German can comment and tells me if S.u.S.E. used the old orthography system or not in my screenshot, I'd be curious.

Setting up this release and getting the graphics to run were rather similar to 5.1 and 5.3. The graphics are also at best 16 color with this release. To get any graphics I start the XF86Setup utility from a root virtual terminal, then switch back to another root terminal and enter another command "DISPLAY=:7.0 xterm". Switching back to the graphic session running for XF86Setup there's then an xterm window from which we can type "kde" or "fvwm". Switching virtual terminals in VirtualBox's default setup is done by pressing the right control key then the F key for the virtual terminal you want to switch to. It typically takes several attempts to switch virtual terminals. Setting the OS to Linux kernel 2.2 in the VirtualBox New VM wizard, there were little hiccups with set up and installation.
