SuSE Linux 8.0 in VirtualBox

Posted 01-19-2020 at 10:59 PM by wagscat123
Updated 01-20-2020 at 07:24 PM by wagscat123

SuSE Linux 8.0 came into this world on April 22, 2002.

Not long after the major write of KDE for version 2.0 came KDE 3.0. This release changed the toolkit underneath from Qt 2 to Qt 3, but bore relatively few highly visible changes. The highly customized and green KDE theme from SuSE Linux 7.3 remains almost perfectly unchanged in SuSE Linux 8.0. I also ran an early version of the Mozilla browser, which seems to bear a much more modern looking interface than Netscape Communicator,...

SuSE Linux 7.3 in VirtualBox

Posted 01-19-2020 at 10:36 PM by wagscat123
Updated 01-19-2020 at 10:59 PM by wagscat123

Two days before Windows XP hit sales, SuSE Linux 7.3 was released on October 23, 2001.

The default KDE setup for this and the next SuSE Linux release were probably the greenest interfaces that the distribution has ever seen. There appears to be significant attention and improvement in the default user interface in the overall color scheme and icon theme. GNOME saw neither an upgrade nor significant changes in this release. By this release, the default boot screen had more sophisticated...

SuSE Linux 7.2 in VirtualBox

Posted 01-19-2020 at 10:09 PM by wagscat123
Updated 01-19-2020 at 11:04 PM by wagscat123

SuSE Linux 7.2 was released June 15, 2001, a few months after the debut of Mac OS X 10.0.

KDE 1 was dropped by default in this release, although by this point KDE 2 was stable enough for day to day use. GNOME was upgraded to version 1.4, which notably includes a switch to the Nautilus file manager, which remains part of GNOME today under the name Files. It is apparent however that even by this point, GNOME favors simplicity over eye candy and customization options when compared to KDE....

SuSE Linux 7.1: Into the 21st Century in VirtualBox

Posted 01-18-2020 at 11:06 PM by wagscat123
Updated 01-19-2020 at 10:09 PM by wagscat123

Look it up - the 21st century technically didn't start until 2001 as there was no year 0 CE. So SuSE Linux 7.1, released January 24, 2001, was the first version of SuSE Linux released in the current century.

SuSE Linux 7.1, likely as a transitional measure, included both KDE 1.1.2 and KDE 2.0.1. KDE 2 was a significant rewrite of KDE as well as a significant change to its interface and overall look. KDE 2 makes a login sound but struggles to log out, and KDE 1 and GNOME can only be...

SuSE Linux 7.0: Decent Graphics in VirtualBox

Posted 01-18-2020 at 10:45 PM by wagscat123
Updated 01-18-2020 at 11:29 PM by wagscat123

SuSE Linux 7.0 was released September 27, 2000. It has a notable place in my experiment to run all fixed released versions of SuSE Linux in my experiment as it's the first to run with remotely decent graphics.

I was able to download a full version of the distribution from archive.org, and test both KDE 1 and an upgraded GNOME 1.2. Both GNOME and KDE look beautiful and feature complete for their times. To start GNOME or the KDE 2 preview, I had to select the Failsafe option in kdm, and...
