computer mag

Posted 04-17-2009 at 10:12 AM by uinseann

I once picked up a Windows based computer mag up. Yes it's true it was me! the magazine was on the top shelf with THOSE other mags you get, where the people buying them have macs on with their collar turned up. The reason I bought the mag was the fact that I noticed it had some Linux distro's on the DVD (I hate that word ...distro's). I had noticed it said Linux Mint was one of them.

I couldn't give a margaret Thatcher about the Windows stuff, but I have limited bandwidth so it saved me downloading. On trying to burn the "iso" I kept getting problems (checksum). When I eventually did get it to burn, it just kept freezing on startup. After the umpteenth attempt I decided to click the properties of the "iso", taking notice of the size. I then went to the download site and found the Mint iso. Sure enough the file was about 40mb bigger than the one on the DVD. I was fed up. I looked in the mag and found the contact email (why should I use my phone?). I wrote about my problem and got a reply the next day. I was told one was in the post, no "sorry" word for putting me out. A week later a DVD came ... yes you guessed right give yourself a coconut!, the DVD was exactly the same, with the same nobbled file!!!

I sent another email pointing out to them "the bleeding obvious". No reply this time, but a new DVD a week later. Yes you must be psychic same DVD same nobbled file on it. I sent another email only this time I told them I give up! you are just useless, and doesn't it occur to you to check the software? Maybe it's because you see Linux users as unimportant and just throw a couple of Linux distributions in for a few more sales! I told them I wouldn't be buying any more of their mags and left it at that. I didn't get any reply and no refund.

In future I will stick with Linux Format Magazine, they probably are owned by the same company, but at least the staff know what they are doing.
