compile a kernel for aspire one

Posted 07-12-2009 at 06:57 AM by theacerguy

hi all,
if any of you want to compile a new kernel for the aspire one
say on openSUSE 11.0 (it doesnt have support for the wifi card) heres how
1)connect a external moniter to the aao cos make menuconfig complains otherwise
2)Get a kernel from either kernel.org or linux format ddvd these have the latest every month
3) go into terminal and do either su or sudo bash to become root
4) type cd /usr/src
5) type tar xjf then the path to your downloaded kernel
6)rm -f linux
7)ln -s linux.x.y.z linux
8)cd/usr/src/linux- then type the downloaded kernel version
9)zypper install ncurses-devel (for suse)
10)make menuconfig (you need ncurses for that)
11)configure the kernel how you like but the defaults should be fine
12)mount /boot if it is a seperate partition
13) make modules_install install
14)when that finishes reboot if you use grub if it is lilo the type /sbin/lilo to make lilo aware of the new kernel
i said to do all makes at once cos then you can leave it without manning the pc for ages

ok on 11.0 i just finished doing mine wifi works a treat now the only things are 1) the opensuse boot splash goes 2)screen resoloution is borked as in all words are tiny but that is fine 3) you have to keep on selecting the option with the latest kernel cos grub is set to default to the old one but im working on a fix

and my fix is to go into yast and then system then bootloader and click the option saying the highest number eg: 2.6.29.4 and then click make default if it all works fine you can delete the options that have old kernel in
