Just annotations of little "how to's", so I know I can find how to do something I've already done when I need to do it again, in case I don't remember anymore, which is not unlikely. Hopefully they can be useful to others, but I can't guarantee that it will work, or that it won't even make things worse.
The "DE" environment variable affects xdg-open settings/behavior

I once saw someone who had "export DE=openbox", and so I changed accordingly, it was "kde" before, even though I'm on Openbox.
But now I realize that it affects things like xdg-open, which is set by configurations that I think aim to set almost-universal file associations. I think that perhaps Openbox "doesn't even count" as a DE to the related settings, so the result is that, for example, you can't open some stuff with the associated app from google chrome/chromium won't open some stuff, after downloading it (jpeg images, for instance). It just does nothing. Perhaps there's another way to fix it and let DE=openbox, I didn't look at the error output (.xsession-errors, probably) to figure anything, I'm satisfied with "DE=kde", since it works for me and I use konqueror as the file manager anyway.
