I am a big fan of the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid) and I agree with LQ member ChuangTzu. Those new to Linux will gain confidence simply by using it and then gradually accumulating further knowledge as time goes by.

I am not suggesting that Linux Mint, featured here, is the most suitable Linux distribution (distro) for all users and for all computer hardware....

As well as using these LQ forums and blogs for valuable information, total newcomers to Linux may like to look at Linux Made Simple from the publishers of Linux Format magazine:

PHP - misleading thoughts

I've recently used to hear from many guys that PHP is bad and useless language. Well, generally the source of that point of thinking is a bad code written by newbies(or mature noobs).
Yes, I admit PHP has some basic functions missing, some features need to be improved, etc. It's far from ideal language. But it is very easy to learn. The problem here is many beginners starting from PHP without reading documentation properly, without looking for security in their apps, and, as a result we have...

I prefer to run applications rather than operating systems.
There are so many wonderful super-geeks who have worked very long and very hard to produce a desktop Linux that is simple enough for even a non-geeky kid like me to use. But not uncommonly, I hear them complaining that too many Linux users rely on the graphical interface and don't bother to learn the command line. It's kind of ironic, dontchya think?
