Is HD Music a scam? A lot of it, probably.

One day I was wandering through the aisles of a thrift shop looking at all the classical music CDs no one wants anymore (or were wanted by someone who died) and it occurred to me to ask: is 44KHz 16-bit "Red Book" really good enough for all music?

The vulgar crowd screamed "Hell, yes!" with the sad reality that for 20+ years crap-MP3 is still the only near-universally playable audio format on just about every platform, even Hefty Mart's cheapest car radio. For...

Unix really wrecked PPC macs

I recently dusted off my old 867MHz PowerBook G4 when I discovered that 128 GB msata SSDs are cheap and so is an IDE to msata adapter. A lot of Mac OS 9 software is also now abandonware.

The plan was to dual boot OS 9.2.2 and OpenBSD 7.1, since Tiger is long dead. Yeah, I could install stuff with MacPorts and HomeBrew, but Tiger is unsupported in both and loads of things will probably fail to compile or take about a week to build even if they do work. To my great surprise, even FVWM...

Miyoo CFW handhelds: are they worth USD 40+?

I used to really like the Dingoo A320. Well, I still do, but I wonder if anything has gotten better at the extreme low end of handheld console gaming in slightly over a decade. So I got a BittBoy 3.5, a Pocket Go, and a Powkiddy V90. btw, what is it with Chinese product name euphony? Are they actually trying to sound like rubbish? Or just being sarcastic?

All three devices use the same custom firmware "Miyoo". I tested this by swapping SD cards with all three and pretty...

Hacking a Dingoo A320 in 2021

I recently bought one of these on eBay for about 20 USD. I quickly discovered that the built-in emulators were of poor quality. In fact, having bought a few super-cheap "Retro Game" knock-off consoles, the hideous PSP-inspired UI and solecisms of Engrish in the menus("3D Game" apparently means "native app" and "Interesting Game" means "emulator or rom".), this little 12-year-old console looked very annoyingly familiar.

So I started...

presbyopia

At the age of 0x2A, I begin to discover that HD and beyond monitors just suck for anything other than watching movies. I pull out a tape measure and calculate DPI but it seems that the correct value just makes the screen look like a billboard.... Then I try adjusting font sizes because everything is way too small, or displayed by default with a super-low-contrast solarized (sc. "washed out") color scheme.

Before you could easily customize your colors (Win 95 to XP, Mac...
