os detection of a remote machine throough its ip address

hey guys! i m presently working how to find the os of a remote machine through its ip address...after extensive searching i have discoevred that there are few ways and they are...

1. active ip stackfingerprinting-- this is how softwares like nmap do it.

2. ttl values--- this is easy and useful but the problem is dat i could not tell specifically the version of the os..i.e. we can tell that whether the remote os is a windows or a linux but u cannot distinguish between...
