Hi. I'm a Unix Administrator, mathematics enthusiast, and amateur philosopher. This is where I rant about that which upsets me, laugh about that which amuses me, and jabber about that which holds my interest most: Unix.

Et tu, Brute?

One of my other passions (aside from OpenBSD, Linux, philosophy, math, etc...) is Cichlids. Not just any Cichlid, though...Lake Malawi (Mbuna) Cichlids, in particular.

I currently have a 55 gallon aquarium housing quite a few species of Mbuna. One notable species is Melanochromis Auratus. I currently have four of them, all purchased before the color changes to distinguish the males and females. When one started to turn black and blue, I named him "Brutus". He happily reigned as the supreme fish in the tank (even over the larger Metriclima Callainos (Cobalt Zebra) and Labidochromis Mbamba).

Then the delicate political structure of the tank got turned upside down. A second M. Auratus turned black.

It took a bit, but I finally came up with a name for the challenger. He is known as "Caesar".

So I decided to write this blog about it, and I double-checked on my Mbuna to make sure nothing silly is going on. Unfortunately, the smallest M. Auratus is now showing signs of color change (The pelvic fins are the first to start showing signs of color change, and he's got the typical bluish-hue black stripe running the length of his pelvic fins now...sigh).

I know the last one is female (she's already produced offspring), but now I'm left with a brooding WW3 fight that could threaten the entire tank.

Looks like I'll be getting a bigger tank (120 gallons?) and putting the Pseudotropheus Crabro and the aforementioned Cobalt Zebras in there, along with Brutus and a few female Auratus.

As for the 55 gallon tank, I think the Labs and Demasoni will be ok with Caesar and a few female Auratus. I really don't know what to do with the last male Auratus, should he challenge Caesar for dominance.

The problem remains, though...what do I name the last male Auratus? Suggestions?

Well, depending upon how WW3 works out, Longus, Octavian, or Marcus Antonius are all options.

My 9 year old came up with the first named fish ("Big Blue", the largest Cobalt in the tank, who I discovered may act passively with Brutus and Caesar 99% of the time, but when push comes to shove really whipped them both into submission at the same time...yikes). I also have a few other less "Roman" names in the tank, if you will ("Tenacious D" and such...).

I really do like the theme going for the Auratus, though. I guess I'll have to see what happens with WW3 to know what to name the last one...heh.

Seems the Cobalts, long the peaceful fish in the aquarium, have started WW3. Apparently the only female Cobalt in the tank has come of age (and is already carrying), and "Big Blue" has already killed the other large male in the tank and isn't tolerating any nonsense from any other fish in the tank. The Auratus have been laying low lately haha.

I would not have thought there was so much going on in fish tanks. Did you get a bigger tank?

Not yet. Seems I'll need to fix that soon.

So, my daughter just received a thirty gallon tank with one fish named Mac. Mac has been lonely for a while and part of taking on the tank was the understanding that we would add new fish friends for Mac. My son (no prompting from me) suggested Winnie and Linux.

I could get into this fish thing. The 12 year old Cory Dory is Mac. The little Cory Dory is Cheese. The two Mollies are Windows and Linux. Unfortunately, they are hassled incessantly by the dog who keeps her nose jammed against the tank. You'd think after three weeks, she'd have learned that the big pane of glass is not going to vanish. Ok, I'll leave your blog alone now.

HA! We have a dachshund who never knew we had fish until I picked her up to let her get a view of the tank. She snapped at one of the Cichlids and liked to have chipped her front teeth on the tank.

A few weeks later listening to her whine constantly at the base of the tank stand, we moved the tank to a lower stand, and now she stands up on her hind legs to watch the fish. It's...weird.

I did not know the tank would become Peyton Place. We added three male and two female Mollies, to the tank which contained two female Molly and one male Molly. One male (Gateway) killed all the other males and now he hassles the females, one in particular, constantly. Is there anyway we can create balance? If we add males will we just have another death or will that give Gateway a new hobby? Literally every time I look at the tank he's chasing the one girl fish.

There can only be one default gateway =P

We've kept mollies before, but disease was always the culprit, not antagonistic networking concepts. I don't know what to tell you.

One of the other males that was killed was called Dell. That's not how it worked out in real life, is it?
