Hi. I'm a Unix Administrator, mathematics enthusiast, and amateur philosopher. This is where I rant about that which upsets me, laugh about that which amuses me, and jabber about that which holds my interest most: Unix.

Boredom gets the best of me...twice.

Woke up this morning feeling a bit groggy. I'd stayed up entirely too late last night debating different human interactions with my wife and a friend of ours. People are not like computers. They are not least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I stumbled through my morning routine, wandered out to the kitchen to grab my lunch, threw the work laptop under my arm and walked out to the car. Bird poo on the driver's side window...again. Not just any bird poo, mind you...this was a flying hippopotamus. This bird had serious digestive issues.

Got in the car, started it up, and started to back out of the driveway. Funny, I thought I put it in reverse? Checked reverse, car is in reverse...but not moving. Check the emergency brake, it's off.

Ok, WTF?

Turns out I was so preoccupied with the massive bird mess on my driver's side window that I failed to notice that the driver's side front tire was flat. Sigh. Get out of the car, walk around and suddenly notice that we have a problem...the passenger side tire is flat, too! BLARG!

Stomp back up the stairs to the apartment, wander back to the bedroom where my wife looks at me quizzically. "Back so soon?", she asks. "Tires are flat." I say, still half asleep.

There's an awkward moment of silence between us.

"Tires, as in plural?", she asks finally.

"Yes, plural."

"All four?"

"No, just the front two."

Again, silence.

"How the?"

"I have no clue.", I say. She scratches her head. More silence.

"Did someone slash our tires?"

I stop to consider her question. It's been a very short irritating day thus far, and this is a development I hadn't expected.

"Ummmm...." I say as I wander back out to the car. Sure enough, there are visible puncture wounds in the sidewalls of the tires. Not even on the inside wall, it's on the outside, in plain view.

I won't bore you with the details of the phone calls to the insurance company, or the police, or the towing company, or work, for that matter. Suffice it to say that I worked from home, but didn't get anything done today. Too much time on the phone, too little time on the laptop.

Car gets towed to the local repair shop, new tires are purchased and put on the car. By now it's so late in the day that I likely will just take a day off to compensate. I drive back home wishing I'd had a security camera and a time machine.

Well wait...I may not have a time machine, but I do happen to have an extra Android device... I perform a search for "motion camera" in the Google Play store, and install the first one that comes up that sounds reasonable. I toy around with it a bit, and it seems to work well. It has a neat feature...send the pictures to an email address. I plug in my favorite email address, hook the android up to a charger, make sure it's connected to our local wireless, and tape the android to the front window of the apartment (second story, so I had to put a block under it to keep the camera down enough to see our car). Then I go outside and test it.

The only downside is that I didn't really have anything else to do after work now I'm watching my email like a hawk.

Suppose I didn't really think that part through...

Could have been a random act of vandalism by braindead kids.

Actually, because of the timing, that's what the police said. They apparently see a spike in vandalism just before school starts. Seems like a stupid "back-to-school" idea, but whatever...
