Hi. I'm jon.404, a Unix/Linux/Database/Openstack/Kubernetes Administrator, AWS/GCP/Azure Engineer, mathematics enthusiast, and amateur philosopher. This is where I rant about that which upsets me, laugh about that which amuses me, and jabber about that which holds my interest most: *nix.

Sorry, non-technical post here...no "war stories of the admin" or "datacenter outages caused by stupidity" today.

I play H1Z1 with my wife. It's a fun little post-outbreak walking-dead-ish game (currently in alpha) of survival in a world just after a massive virus outbreak...yadda yadda yadda. Bottom line: don't die to zombies, starvation, or wildlife (particularly bears).

Bears. Good God, man. Unlike real life, bears are relatively easy to...

OpenBSD /etc/ipsec.conf for AWS VPC VPN

Posted 02-16-2015 at 10:57 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

Disclaimer: I am an AWS employee. This blogpost is my own configuration and does not reflect a supported configuration for AWS VPC VPN. This *should* work for you, but YMMV.

I've been testing a configuration for ipsec between an OpenBSD-5.6 (STABLE) machine and AWS VPC VGW. One thing to keep in mind is that OpenBSD's ipsec implementation is policy-based, whereas AWS is route-based, so you'll run into some issues when leveraging dynamic routing. For the time-being, I'll stick...

Trolling a Twitch Streamer, aka Lessons From the Wife

My wife is a gamer. Gamers are a bit...uhh, different from your typical "computer nerds". They're a bit mean, abrasive, and...well, ok, they're pretty much exactly like most computer nerds I know =)

Last night my wife decided to prank a twitch.tv live stream. It's common practice for "followers" to have hilarious names and laugh gloriously when a streamer reads their new follower names out loud to their thousands of viewers during a live broadcast. So there...

Data Limits in 2015?

Posted 02-11-2015 at 07:57 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

I know Comcast has suspended their 250 GB limit and have been trialing different data plans, including one of the more idiotic ideas I've read yet (more on that in a moment), but I never bothered to actually read up on the stupidity that is taking place in the U.S.'s largest cable provider's upper management tier.

On first glance, lifting the 250 GB per month limit is a great idea. On the flipside, the way they are working around this is by raising the limit to 300 GB (gracias, amigos!...

When "walk" becomes "whee"

Posted 02-06-2015 at 01:03 AM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

Headed out the door and ended up skiing down my lawn this morning before work (steep lawn + heavy backpack + very slick mossy ground = me on my back, but not until I built up enough speed to actually do some damage to myself and the lawn). By the time I got home tonight from work, my back was hurting bad enough for me to take a few pain killers. They've definitely kicked in, it's getting late, and I think I have too much going on at the same time.

I'm building OpenBSD-STABLE on...
