Dell loosing the plot?

Posted 07-31-2010 at 02:41 PM by rich_c

Over the past week or so, I've seen a few things that would seriously put me off buying from Dell. Which is a shame, because a lot of my kit at home is Dell and it serves me quite well! The issues are:

Dell's been shipping server motherboards with malware 'pre-installed'. The other quality/customer service issue I've picked up on, on a smaller scale, is a colleague who paid for 24hr response support only to have the engineer that attended his borked laptop make it worse! Instead...

Microsoft and the National Health Service

Posted 07-19-2010 at 03:43 PM by rich_c

I saw a ‘The Register’ article late last week regarding the rebate deal between the NHS and Microsoft coming to an end. I didn’t think too much of it apart from hoping that alternative (FOSS) solutions will get proper consideration. The benefits being cost savings, which would seem to be a very high UK Government priority and avoiding a situation in the future where a monopolistic vendor might feel they can feather their nest with an initial generous deal followed by less favourable terms once...

I read an article today entitled "Why do we (Love to) hate Microsoft." An interesting piece but the comments are as, if not more, telling. I, like many others spent many years not knowing any better. My Microsoft user days go back to MSX home computers. At the time, it seemed to me that the philosophy of 'one system to rule them all' was a good one in the interests of interoperability. I quite happily used Windows 3.11 and Windows 95 but then had a brief dabble with SuSE. As a Windows...

Ads on some Linux related websites...

Posted 06-22-2010 at 05:30 PM by rich_c

Some sites seem to pay no heed to what ads are displayed on their pages! If I had £1 for every time I'd seen a M$ related ad on a Linux/FOSS related site, I'd have quite a lucrative ad derived income...
