An amusing little diversion.

Posted 05-15-2011 at 09:43 AM by rich_c

Here's a bit of fun you readers might like to join in with... It's a little quiet this afternoon, so I thought I'd kill 5 minutes with a little game I like to play from time to time. It's simple and provides me with a bit of perverse satisfaction. All you have to do is go to Bing and search for a few Linux related terms. Click on the result(s) you like the look of, as a Linux user.

I like to imagine that it fscks with someone at Microsoft's Bing usage stats...

A Wubi issue fixed!

Posted 05-02-2011 at 03:58 AM by rich_c

A colleague asked me to have a look at a laptop he’d installed Mint on using Wubi. He was getting an error
Code:
Try (hd0,0): NTFS5 no wubildr
which was delaying booting into Mint by a minute or two. After much Googling, the solution wasn’t immediately obvious. So, I thought I’d blog it here!

In the end, what the solution turned out to be was pretty trivially simple. I located wubildr and wubildr.mbr on the C: drive (/host with Mint running.) and copied them to the ‘hidden’ partition...

openSUSE for real!

Posted 04-28-2011 at 02:59 PM by rich_c

Further to my post about playing with openSUSE in Virtualbox, I've finally got a new HDD and installed properly on my test machine. (Compaq iPaq desktop 1GHz, 512mb RAM with a 120 GB HDD) I hit a couple of strange ones during install, like my swap partition wasn't automatically added to fstab and there's no provision to choose a host name but apart from that it was an easy install. My 11.3 LXDE system boots damn quick and runs pretty smooth too. I'm looking forward to upgrading to 11.4 and then...

Nokia N900

Posted 04-13-2011 at 05:58 AM by rich_c

For anyone who wants a really capable Linux based phone, I'm back to recommending the N900. I know, there's the whole Elop episode but...

The Maemo community now have the Community SSU. In my view, that more than makes up for all the corporate politics & Microsoft BS! The N900 is back to being arguably the best uber-geek phone you can get!

openSUSE

Posted 04-11-2011 at 10:33 AM by rich_c

As I mentioned in the post before this one, I'm looking to install openSUSE on my test box when it's new hard drive arrives.

In the meantime, I've been playing with it as a Virtualbox guest... Initially, during the install, I was a little unimpressed and started to wonder if I might have to try an alternative distro. However, first impressions aren't always accurate. I'm currently very impressed!

The install I performed was on a standard 8GB virtual disk. I rather...
