Security and convenience.

Posted 12-06-2009 at 08:47 AM by rich_c

Having recently seen some advice been given out stating that it is OK to use the root user id as a day-to-day account, I decided to seek some knowledgeable advice on this.

My requests for opinions on this matter attracted some comments from some pretty credible sources, including people from IBM and Sun Microsystems in roles that would qualify them to comment! No-one advocated the use of the root account for anything more than tasks that made it absolutely necessary! The use of sudo and (Where available) RBAC were advocated as much better solutions for convenience's sake where admin tasks needed to be delegated to other users.
