Dell loosing the plot?

Posted 07-31-2010 at 02:41 PM by rich_c

Over the past week or so, I've seen a few things that would seriously put me off buying from Dell. Which is a shame, because a lot of my kit at home is Dell and it serves me quite well! The issues are:

Dell's been shipping server motherboards with malware 'pre-installed'. The other quality/customer service issue I've picked up on, on a smaller scale, is a colleague who paid for 24hr response support only to have the engineer that attended his borked laptop make it worse! Instead of gracefully accepting their mistake and rectifying it quickly, Dell Support then saw fit to dig their heels in to avoid putting themselves out to fix the second problem. Neither incident (Motherboard or shoddy support.) is going to win new customers or, indeed, retain old ones.

Also, Dell have had to cough $100 mil up due to charges of accounting fraud. Couple this with news that they're unceremoniously dumping Ubuntu apparently due to lack of interest. If they gave Ubuntu a fair shot in terms of promotion on their website and put just a little effort into pointing customers toward available support channels then it might be a different story. Both of these revelations, to me, speak of a company I'd think twice about doing business with!

All in all, I think my next PC will be home built...
