Background
I've been in IT for over 4 years now and playing around with linux just over two of those. Ive recently been getting a little more serious about my training as I reported in my entry about my Preplogic training purchase. And while I want to claim that I fight the good fight the reality is that my tiny company is still primarily windows based despite efforts to bring them over to linux.

Issue
It's because of this that I wasn't concerned that my PrepLogic training...

Charities and FOSS

Posted 12-08-2009 at 03:37 AM by rich_c

Recently I came across someone asking for advice on software to use as they are in the early stages of running a charity. It occured to me that charities should be aware of Free and Open Source Software and how it can help make the most of the donations they receive. Clearly, with FOSS there is the free-as-in-beer element which is important here. With FOSS, charities aren't obliged to pay up front licencing charges but can contribute as and when they are able.

Personally, I'd feel...

Update for those looking to learn Linux - to a nit-picky degree...

Posted 12-07-2009 at 02:21 PM by kcoriginal

I re-found Red Hat 9 - "Shrike" the other day. The Red Hat site had some seriously detailed manuals that go with that. Clear, large, good.

Red Hat 9, I would call, the first of the modern Linux distributions. I know that Debian was in good shape about that time... but... overall the market-share wasn't so hot for Deb at that time.

Now, I am an ubuntu fanatic...!

But, if you feel like ubuntu is masking too much of the nuts and bolts, yet, still...

Upgrading from openSUSE11.1 to openSUSE11.2

Posted 12-07-2009 at 12:58 PM by clvic

I'm starting my first (significant) post on this blog, reporting my experience on openSUSE upgrade, from 11.1 to 11.2.
I started from this useful post:
http://lizards.opensuse.org/2009/10/...-11-1-to-11-2/
that basically shows how to do this task by using the command line tool "zypper".

I made some variation to this procedure: I did not want to burn a DVD and I did not want to perform a network install.
That's simple!...
