Virtual machines

Posted 12-23-2008 at 03:17 PM by jozik

Well, that was easy: installed Virtualbox (using synaptic) and made a couple of virtual machines: Debian and WindowsXP. It's really simple, just don't forget to make a virtual disk and to mount de CD/DVD-drive or ISO-image with the installation disk(-image). Funny thing is that I get the impression that the virtual machines are faster then the 'normal' ones, at least in powering up. I'm curious to hear if you have the same impression.
I'll use the virtual Debian machine for my LPI training,...

So after a fresh install of ubuntu studio I was rocking and rolling. I decided that since I had no luck with packages I would compile myself and it worked great.

First thing you need to do is install all the pre-requisite goodies

sudo apt-get install build-essential liblircclient-dev libasound2-dev libdts-dev libdvdnav-dev libxv-dev libxxf86vm-dev transcode libmp3lame-dev subversion qt4-dev-tools libqt4-dev libsamplerate0 libxvidcore4 liba52-0.7.4-dev libfame-dev

Is KDE 4 supposed to be such a dis-organised pile of shite ???

Posted 12-22-2008 at 10:03 AM by bigjohn

Ok, so over the last weekend, I was doing my regular updates - a habit I picked up when I was using sidux, but it made sense to try and update regularly.

Anyway, I reload the Kubuntu 8.04 sources and it tells me that there's a dist-upgrade available i.e. to 8.10 (whatever they've called it).

Ok thinks me, I might as well, so I fire it up........

It gets all the way through and then says I have to reboot the system - well it had installed a newer kernel...

How to Install Latest Wine in debian Etch

Posted 12-22-2008 at 02:29 AM by sridhar11

Wine makes it possible to run Windows programs alongside any Unix-like operating system, particularly Linux. At its heart, Wine is an implementation of the Windows Application Programing Interface (API) library, acting as a bridge between the Windows program and Linux.Think of Wine as a compatibility layer, when a Windows program tries to perform a function that Linux doesnít normally understand, Wine will translate that programís instruction into one supported by the system. For example, if a program...
