Remote management of Linux systems via Python and ssh (Part 2)

Updated 10-27-2009 at 07:50 PM by rocket357 (modified code)

My last blogpost on Python/SSH seemed to be popular, so here I am again with a more in-depth look at what can be accomplished with this pairing.

To recap, I manage 300 databases, some M$ SQL Server, some PostgreSQL. There are a ton of Apache/Linux machines on our network and quite a few "traffic cops" based on Linux and BSD (as well as a few Cisco machines) for routing external traffic to internal machines. Pretty standard stuff. The IT department has a director, a network...

Update on Rapla

Posted 02-03-2009 at 04:22 PM by SrDorothy

Checked in with my friend "who knows all"...and got a reminder that nobody knows everything, and/or has the time to learn everything. He is more familiar with php than java, so he had me look for programs that are written in php. I found a number, so picked out a few and we plan to download and try them one by one. This is all in aid of bringing our retreat house room-booking up to date...So for now Rapla is out and we'll see what else might be in! This is not to say Rapla might not...

Can anyone help me build a webcam device driver?

Posted 02-03-2009 at 09:45 AM by mcvasant

I've installed Fedora 6 (kernel 2.6.18-1.2798.fc6) on my Acer Aspire 5570 laptop.
It's got an Acer Orbicam webcam on it.I am trying to build a device driver for it as it does not work on its own in Linux.

I've first tried to build a simple "hello world" module as a driver.
Here are the things I did:

1. Installed kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i586 as

yum install kernel-devel-2.6.18-1.2798.fc6.i586

2. Then...
