Ubuntu!?!?

Posted 01-08-2007 at 08:29 AM by truthfatal

Well, I'm a Slacker for the most part... but the other day I decided to back up all my Slack stuff and give a *buntu another try. mostly because I don't want to take the time to compile all of the recording/DAW type apps that I want. they're all available in the *buntu repos. Of course I could have installed Musix or Dyne:Bolic to my HD, but I've had bad luck in the past installing very specialized Distros to the HD then trying to update the packages.... (Bastard SymphonyOS... nice OS, but still...

LFS by a newbie, part deux progress report...

Posted 01-07-2007 at 05:05 AM by threekgtvr4

Well, since my last post on building LFS 6.2, I've completed chapter 5 with no further problems and moved on to chapter 6. I should have finished with the LFS build in 8 days, but it's taking me some extra time because I am using the More Control and Package Management Using Package Users hint. The reason it's...

Posted 01-06-2007 at 11:15 PM by Oblivia

OK, so I got Ubuntu installed and slowly running (slowly, until the replacement RAM comes in. I hope.) so the next step should be to install stuff I want to run on it, right? I downloaded a bunch of such installation files from work and put them on CDs to load up at home. As it turns out: Ubuntu doesn't like RPM files - you have to use something called deb files to load new software. Of which I have none. Aaargh! I guess this is why they call what I'm doing the "School of Hard Knox"....

Progress!!

Posted 01-04-2007 at 09:47 PM by Oblivia

OK! So asking dumb newbie questions on the forums does work. Between this site and linuxforum.org, I got the idea that this was probably a hardware problem. Generally, the advice was "bad CD drive" or "not enough memory" -- as it turns out, everyone was kinda right: it was actual RAM that had gone bad. Of course, it took a lot of Googling to find the documentation for the PC and a long time to pore through it all and...

My First Blog!

Posted 01-04-2007 at 02:19 PM by Oblivia

Now I can say I'm a blogger, too! I guess this will be the way I chronicle my journey from Total Linux Newbie (my Linux experience, to date? I saw some guy at work using it once) to..... Linux Geek? Dunno -- I think Competent User would make me happy enough.
So, where am I now? One of my New Years resolutions is to get smarter about this computer stuff. I inherited a cast-off PC from work that has a really old version of Windows on it -- nobody knows of any logins or passwords so I'm starting...
