To Linux or not to Linux? That is the question....

No, I am not questioning whether I should keep using Linux (or not). What I am questioning is the wisdom of trying to get close relatives to use Linux when all they use is Windows.

When is it alright to get someone in your family to use something they have never used before?

Me? I have given up trying to get anyone close to me to use Linux. My mother jinxes any computer she touches. She installs junk (which I believe cause most of her computer problems), though when...

Digging around in the core code

Due to a combination of misconfiguration and a buggy bootprom/kernel interface, I just spent several days digging around in the 2.6.18.8 kernel bring-up code, looking for why my nominated RFS device was being ignored.

On the journey I noticed several things that may be worthy of comment (or on the other hand, maybe all of the following is well-trodden territory for the guys on here - judge for yourselves).

Strange linking

In my ongoing effort to understand how this works, I am now posting a second entry. The first one was called "Is this a blog?"

Interestingly, the title is in fact visible on the list of blogs. However, when I click on the title "Is this a blog?", then I get one of several enteries by other people. Not my own. It would appear that these "blogs" are cross-linked in some strange way.

What happened to my original entry? My profile says that...

Windows has everything...

That was the argument used by my grandfather when I told him to reboot...into Archlinux if he wanted to work efficiently. "What doesn't Linux have?" was my natural response. "Linux doesn't have my documents, Linux doesn't have the software for my Kodak digital camera, and for my pulse monitoring device" I admit I had to concede the last point. Try explaining the difference between storing/accessing data and running a program : in both cases its just a click on an icon. So Linux...
