Hello all. I've decided to keep a log of my Unix and Linux escapades on my LQ Blog.

I've been a Unix guy since 1980. I got my first login while pursing an Information Engineering degree (INFE) at the University of Illinois Chicago Circle campus (UICC). I can't remember my login name, it was probably jpb. The computer was a PDP 11/45 with 256Kb of RAM. I don't know how big the disk was. It was running a modified Unix V7 kernel. The shell was... sh. The sysadmin, Ralph, had a room where...

GOG.com has some pretty decent deals on Windows only games. A couple of these games were originally released with native Linux clients.

Installing UT2004 and running native on Linux is pretty straight forward. You will need wine to run the GOG installer though. I accomplished this on Slackware64 multilib without any issues.

I've decided to change from Ubuntu to Debian Testing again, after a bad encounter with the Ubuntu updater. Long story short, I did not know it was going to take 4+ hours to update from 10.04 to 10.10, and when I was informed, I just killed the system power in disgust.

Anyway, as with every system I've had on this laptop ( an Acer Aspire 5536 ) I've discovered why I will never buy ATI/AMD graphics hardware again. You have two driver options - xserver-radeon and fglrx.

I am blushing.

Do not know whether I am helping or defeating the linux cause. But I am blushing from my alter ego name being mentioned again on the most recent Revision3/Tekzilla podcast.

Yea, the l293d's came in. Have to now follow God's hacker commandment of "Thall shalt solder".

Keeping multi-lib Slackware64 up-to-date. . .

Posted 11-05-2010 at 10:00 AM by Lufbery (The Slacker's Blog)

Hi all,

I'm several months into maintaining Slackware64_13.1-multi-lib and I have a few observations.

The basic premise for applying security (and other) updates to Slackware is as follows:
  1. Get your security update notice via e-mail and then read the changelog. (Reading the changelog is a great idea because not all Slackware updates are security updates).
  2. Download the relevant packages from the /patches directory of your Slackware version's mirror (e.g.
