Time to celebrate

Posted 12-24-2010 at 06:04 PM by Larry Webb

My wife has been windows free for three months. I have not had to do any repairs to her desktop and she has been telling her friends how great her Suse works. I now have my daughter asking to install linux on her netbook. She is not sure about their desktop, but is thinking about letting me setup a dual boot.

Moving away from the general theme of depression and existential angst, I'd like to report a (however partial) small success: I'm posting this from my desktop computer, without the need for it to "piggy-back" on my laptop's wireless connection.

There's a slight catch, though: I'm having to do it roughly the same way I did it on Ubuntu: install ndiswrapper, set up the Windows driver for my Netgear WN111 USB wireless dongle through ndiswrapper, and hope for the best. It...

Considering a custom-built desktop.

Well, I've been thinking the last few days and I have gotten very fond of building a desktop computer myself. I've had such trouble with laptops -- and I've never owned a desktop. I mean, I spend most of my 'computer time' at home anyway, so why do I need a laptop so badly? I could work 1 or 2 months and sell my MacBook Pro and build a top of the line desktop for el-cheapo. I could make it look really cool, choose my own parts, feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment and learn something...

umurmur port progress

A few days ago I got umurmur up and running on OpenBSD. I sent the build patches in to the project developer and they were committed with minor edits. I've continued working on umurmur and I am closing in on submitting a port to OpenBSD.

I submitted three additional patches today to the umurmur project dev. The patches were to remove linker warnings (no, not all ports do that, but I will =) and now I've moved on to the finicky topic of security auditing. The baseline that I'm...

Terminal icon for root with hash in screen

Posted 12-22-2010 at 01:55 AM by catkin
Tags hash, icon, root, screen

In case anybody is looking for one (I was and could not find one anywhere), the attachments are terminal icons with a hash (#) character.

This is not my area of expertise so improvement suggestions are welcome. Is PNG the best format for icons? Is 48x48 a good size choice?

In case anyone is curious how it was made, Terminal.svg was copied and loaded in Gimp. Most of the shading was removed (plain black background is more distinct at small display sizes such as in...
