Title says it. So I've been using fluxbox forever with mrxvt and was stoked about my setup until I got once again sidetracked on the quest for screen real estate. Looks like I've finally achieved maximum useful pixel density re: the bloat around the edges. RAM usage is up a bit but I can't see RAM ever being an issue with the way I run Debian.

3DTV isn't really 3D if it isn't holographic

Posted 01-10-2011 at 10:06 PM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

While I agree that TV is coming a long way in regards to how it is viewed, how clear the picture it is, and how many channels, it certainly hasn't come far enough in regards to 3D. How? Let me explain:

To view today's current 3D programming, you need glasses. You can still use 3D glasses on regular TVs! That means there's currently nothing a 3DTV can do that any current TV can't. Hell, I have even viewed standard-definition 3D DVDs on a 15-year-old set! It's really the glasses that...

Ubuntu 11.04: The OS to beat

Posted 01-08-2011 at 03:50 PM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

So far, what I've heard about Ubuntu 11.04 is absolutely *incredible* and will probably make proprietary software bite the dust. How? Let me explain:

First of all, we come to Unity, the desktop environment that is *extremely* simple to use and therefore will attract more users. In particular, having a UI that's n00b-proof is *really* incredible. Its Launcher, Dash, Panel, indicator-appmenu, and appindicator are all incredibly easy to use and navigate. However, Unity 3 still needs...

Running an sftp-only daemon on RHEL5

Posted 01-08-2011 at 03:05 PM by anomie

The problem:
  • You're a RHEL5 sysadmin.
  • You want to run your regular ol' ssh daemon.
  • You also want to chroot a few sftp users.
  • You need the OpenSSH Match directive with support for the ChrootDirectory directive! This functionality exists as of OpenSSH version 5.1. [1]
  • Alas, your RHEL5 server still runs OpenSSH version 4.3p2. [2]

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Some thoughts and a solution:

You can...

gentoo stage3-x86-uclibc-2008.0 hacking

Posted 01-08-2011 at 02:47 PM by Web31337 (In The Middle Of Nowhere [edK's blog])

Long time no posting
Today I'm going to describe my so called experience with gentoo stage3 from 2008, linked against uClibc, a tiny C library for developing embedded environments.
I first met uClibc on my router's tomato-usb firmware. I was amazed when I've seen how small memory usage was, even for coreutils-apps.
Since that I was looking for decent inspiration to try out building my own uClibc-based environment. As I previously wrote (I think I did), I once was an assembler...
