Try Linux before you switch

Posted 05-21-2011 at 07:22 PM by Telengard (Here are some things which I hope will be helpful.)
Updated 05-23-2011 at 10:12 PM by Telengard (Much more info, links for reference)

Are you thinking of switching from Windows to Linux? Are you worried about the installation process? How can you protect your Windows system and data just in case something goes wrong?

Before you begin playing with an operating system you may know very little about, please consider backing up any data you care about to at least two external media.

Boot Linux from a live CD

New laptop!

Posted 05-21-2011 at 02:31 AM by lupusarcanus (Lone Wolf)

Another HP finds itself at my house somehow . It's an HP EliteBook 8740w. Bought it slightly used from a nice guy on another forum for $1025. I love it so far.

Specs:

- Intel Core i5-560M
- ATI FirePro M7820
- 8 GiB RAM
- 500 GB 7200 RPM HDD

Been playing around with the reinstalled OEM Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and enjoying myself. Had quite a bit of trouble with PayPal but everything is pretty much done now.

Tried to get to a web site that never goes down, but could not. Then I went to my instructables account to see how it was doing. Hardly any additional views. Hmmm. Decided to check on the web site that was down. Yeah, it came back up! They I noticed my views started growing again. Assumption: the web site was never down, but there was some...

Posted 05-20-2011 at 04:01 AM by Web31337 (In The Middle Of Nowhere [edK's blog])

A bit of scary story with happy ending. Below I describe how failing HDD may look in your syslogs, and how I "resolved" this issue.
NOTICE: when you see I/O errors anywhere, or you see something like this in syslog YOUR FIRST TASK IS TO MAKE BACKUPS AS FAST AS POSSIBLE!!! ONLY WHEN YOU ARE SURE YOUR DATA IS NOW BACKED UP AND SAFE, you may proceed with something like "fixing"!

Recently had an accident involving few bad blocks on HDD. The target was Seagate...

annotating PDF files

Posted 05-19-2011 at 10:55 AM by neonsignal

Filling in PDF forms can sometimes be annoying, especially when the forms are DRM controlled (and do not provide edit fields).

A useful utility is flpsed. It isn't a PDF editor as such; instead, it allows the addition of text annotations to PDF files by tacking them on to the end of the file, which means that it works on just about any PDF.

Font size and color can be selected. The annotation set can be saved separately if required, and it can also be used from the command...
