Script madness! Or, why I love the shell prompt

Posted 03-21-2010 at 08:50 PM by Raveolution

So today I decided I was tired of dealing with a whole large directory of zip files. Since all the zip files were uniquely named, I figured might as well make a corresponding directory name and unpack each one in there.

Good luck doing that in Winderz. But I'm not in Winderz. I'm on a shell prompt. So what's a nerd to do.

Well, so far I worked it out this way. In bash, I did:

for i in *.zip;do unzip $i -d `echo $i| sed -e 's/.zip//g'`;done

What doesn't Linux do for me?

It doesn't do my laundry.
It doesn't write emails to my mom (or my ex).

Here some things that I think it should be able to do, but I don't know yet:

Choose my songs - is there any app that will predict what music files you'll like? My mp3 player has a feature like this in its shuffle.

How about this option: a quick boot that opens a web browser and a normal looking desktop. As features are loaded in the back end, then they become available. Like...

Quota stats reporting for existing users

Posted 03-19-2010 at 09:43 AM by Mr. ameya sathe (Tantra Yantra Swatantrya)

According to documentation; you have followed the correct procedure for creating quota for a group as well as for a user. But; still the
repquota command is still displaying the quota value for soft and hard limit as zero.

The reason is that; unless & until a file owned by that by particular group or the user is created, repquota will not report the quota values for the said group and user.
Remember this file must be of non-zero value.

Three favorite distros currently in testing: SimplyMEPIS, antiX, PCLinuxOS

Posted 03-18-2010 at 01:06 PM by masinick

Two of my favorite Debian based distributions, and one RPM based distribution that uses Debian-like packaging tools are in their testing cycles right now.

SimplyMEPIS and antiX, two of the products in the MEPIS family, have been through several iterations of their Beta testing cycle, and now each of them has also released three release candidates (RC), and they are very cloe to release. Each of them has a Version 8.5 RC 3 now available for testing. These can be upgraded to final...
