linux in old computer: from DSL to LinuxfromScratch through SLAX and ConnochaetOS

Posted 09-19-2013 at 05:10 AM by translator1111 (CLI is your friend)

I had an old Fujitsu notebook with W95 as OS with 2 partitions on it C:for OS; D: for Data. toguether a 5 GB HDDD. I made a third partition with the help of HAOS tools dividing C in half with volume EXT3 (1600 MB) took some space from D: for a fourth partition with volume EXT3 (50 MB) and another with volume EXT2 (120 MB).
This laptop has two problems, one is that there is a bad sector in HDD, which I hopefully has isolated when I made the partitions and a problem with memory.
As GUI...

RIP: bad value: NULL

Posted 09-18-2013 at 08:57 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

Spent a few days debugging what I thought was a bizarre kernel bug on a RHEL 6.3 box. We had crash utilities installed and I'd gotten incredibly comfortable with analyzing kernel crash dumps. I can also say that I'm intimately familiar with a few features of the Linux kernel that I didn't even know existed before.

If you know much about kernel debugging, you probably already know the fix (due to the subject line). See, when you analyze a kernel crash dump, you get certain information,...

The system language...

Got X11 working.

Posted 09-17-2013 at 09:07 PM by ReaperX7

Finished the main chapter of X-Windows for BLFS today and fired up the twm (tiling window manager) that is more or less a very basic desktop environment with a few X-Terminals (xterm) open, and got a few more packages built.

I'm now working on the X Forms Common Environment (Xfce) UI to give me a basic desktop environment to work from and after that I'll be looking into the Xfce applications as well.
