RaspEX for Raspberry Pi 3 and 2 with openCPN 4.2.1

Posted 06-29-2016 at 01:17 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

NEWS 160629 about RaspEX with OpenCPN pre-installed

The system is now based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I've also upgraded OpenCPN to version 4.2.1. (Latest for Linux). To my great joy also this version of RaspEX worked together with the 7″ Touchscreen Monitor for Raspberry Pi "out of the box".

NOTE: Today's version of RaspEX hasn't been distributed yet.

The 7″ Touchscreen Monitor for Raspberry Pi works in RaspEX Build 160426, based on Ubuntu 16.04, with Kodi Media Center 16.0

Great news 160627 about RaspEX Build 160426
I got the official 7″ Touchscreen Monitor for Raspberry Pi today. I started immediately to test the touchscreen running RaspEX. To my great pleasure (and surprise) the touchscreen worked perfectly out of the box! I.e. I didn’t have to install any extra packages to make it work. According to Raspberrypi.org only Raspbian OS is supposed to give full functionality without a physical keyboard or mouse.

Updated 06-25-2016 at 10:50 AM by exton (MORE INFO)

RaspAnd Build 160625 is an Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow system which can run on Raspberry Pi 3 and Pi 2. I have finally managed to include Google Play Store and other GAPPS. This version of RaspAnd is faster and more responsive than RaspAnd Lollipop Build 150924/160315.

Wifi and Bluetooth support
This new version of RaspAnd has support for Wifi and Bluetooth (on Raspberry Pi 3). RaspAnd runs very well on the new Raspberry Pi 3 computer. The system runs also on the “old” Raspberry...

Why "easy" distributions are difficult

In retrospect, I wonder why so many seasoned users have (over the years) recommended me to go for "easy" distros, that have been "scientifically" designed for all users. I wish somebody had told me to go for the "hard" ones. That would have saved me a lot of pain.
My problem with the "easy" distros has been that everything would be fine at the beginning and all I needed to know was point-and-click sequences in order to start working. Maybe some basic...

Tiny optimizations that you might forget every time you (re)install linux

Posted 06-18-2016 at 03:29 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)

I don't (re)install that often, so I completely forgot there were some types video-acceleration options that could be set in a tiny xorg.conf to speed things up a little. Fortunately it's a paralell install to one I'm sort of abandoning, so I still have it:

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Intel Graphics"
        Driver "intel"
        Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
# Option "TearFree"
